The axillary vein puncture for implantable cardiac defibrillator implantation: 14 years of experience. Analysis of the results Int. J. Cardiol. (IF 3.5) Pub Date : 2024-04-30 Giovanni Morani, Bruna Bolzan, Antonio Pepe, Giampaolo Berton, Mattia Strazzanti, Flavio Luciano Ribichini
Axillary vein puncture (AVP) is a valid alternative to Subclavan vein puncture for leads insertion in cardiac implantable electronic device implantation, that may reduce acute and delayed complications. Very few data are available about ICD recipients. All the patients who consecutively underwent “de novo” ICD implantation, from March 2006 to December 2020 at the University of Verona, were considered

The role of circulating progenitor cells (CPC) in collateral formation that occurs in the presence of chronic total occlusions (CTO) of a coronary artery is not well established. In stable patients with a CTO, we investigated whether CPC levels are associated with (a) collateral development and (b) ischemic burden, as measured by circulating high sensitivity troponin-I (hsTn-I) levels. CPCs were enumerated

Association of platelet distribution width with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in US adults Int. J. Cardiol. (IF 3.5) Pub Date : 2024-04-23 Liza Botros, Rehan Qayyum
Platelet distribution width (PDW) indicates heterogeneity in circulating platelet sizes. Studies reporting PDW association with mortality were limited by small sample sizes. Therefore, we examined the relationship between PDW and all-cause and cause-specific mortality in a large representative cohort. The NHANES III data were linked to mortality files to examine the association between PDW and mortality

In chronic heart failure (HF), exercise-induced increase in pulmonary capillary pressure may cause an increase of pulmonary congestion, or the development of pulmonary oedema. We sought to assess in HF patients the exercise-induced intra-thoracic fluid movements, by measuring plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), lung comets and lung diffusion for carbon monoxide (DLCO) and nitric oxide (DLNO), as

Is pre-diabetes a predictor of events in patients with atrial fibrillation? Int. J. Cardiol. (IF 3.5) Pub Date : 2024-04-20 Ana Ledo Piñeiro, Emad Abu-Assi, Inmaculada González Bermúdez, Vanesa Noriega Caro, Andrés Íñiguez-Romo, Sergio Raposeiras-Roubín
Diabetes mellitus (DM) increases the probability of presenting atrial fibrillation (AF) and it is a predictor of its ischemic stroke. There is limited information of the association between glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels and ischemic, embolic or bleeding events in patients with pre-DM and AF. To investigate whether the presence of pre-DM in patients with AF predicts ischemic or bleeding events

Ticagrelor downregulates the expression of proatherogenic and proinflammatory miR125-b compared to clopidogrel: A randomized, controlled trial Int. J. Cardiol. (IF 3.5) Pub Date : 2024-04-20 Aleksandra Gasecka, Ewelina Błażejowska, Kinga Pluta, Magdalena Gajewska, Sylwester Rogula, Krzysztof J. Filipiak, Janusz Kochman, Jolanta M. Siller-Matula, Marek Postuła, Ceren Eyileten
Platelet P2Y12 antagonist ticagrelor reduces cardiovascular mortality after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) compared to clopidogrel, but the underlying mechanism is unknown. Because activated platelets release proatherogenic and proinflammatory microRNAs, including miR-125a, miR-125b and miR-223, we hypothesized that the expression of these miRNAs is lower on ticagrelor, compared to clopidogrel.

Tissue Fibroblast Activation Protein alpha (FAP) is overexpressed in various types of acute and chronic cardiovascular disease. A soluble form of FAP has been detected in human plasma, and low circulating FAP concentrations are associated with increased risk of death in patients with acute coronary syndrome. However, little is known about the regulation and release of FAP from fibroblasts, and whether

Guidelines recommend standard pre-operative cardiac screening in all liver transplantation (LT) recipients, despite the relatively low prevalence of obstructive coronary artery disease. Most LT recipients often have non-gated computed tomography (CT) performed of the chest and abdomen. First-time detected atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with aggravated prognosis in patients admitted with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Yet, among patients surviving beyond one year after ACS, it remains unclear how the recurrence of AF within the initial year after ACS affects the risk of stroke. With Danish nationwide data from 2000 to 2021, we identified all patients with first-time ACS who

To determine whether a family history of unexplained heart failure (HF) in first-degree relatives (children or sibling) increases the rate of unexplained HF. Using Danish nationwide registry data (1978–2017), we identified patients (probands) diagnosed with first unexplained HF (HF without any known comorbidities) in Denmark, and their first-degree relatives. All first-degree relatives were followed
