    This work presents an innovative framework for the simulation of stable pit growth that accounts for the material microstructure in the computational model to investigate its effect on pit growth behavior. While many microstructural attributes can affect corrosion kinetics, the current work focuses on the effect of the crystallographic plane orientation at the corrosion front by utilizing variations in polarization behavior with orientation in a single phase material. The current modeling results show that crystallographic orientation significantly affects local pit growth rates (even with corrosion potential variations as little as 5-10% across orientations) and the resultant tortuous shapes are similar to pits observed in experimental studies.

  • On the stress corrosion crack growth behaviour in high temperature water of 316L stainless steel made by laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing

    This paper reports a comprehensive study of the stress corrosion crack growth behaviour of laser additively-manufactured (AM) 316L stainless steel in high temperature water. A wide range of parameters and their effects were evaluated, including microstructure, heat treatment, stress intensity factor, cold work, crack orientation, oxidizing vs. reducing conditions, and porosity. Stress-relieved material exhibits anisotropic microstructure and preferred crack path along material’s build direction. With high-temperature annealing, the material recrystallizes to equiaxed structure and behaves like wrought material. The retained unrecrystallized grains in an annealed AM part may not affect the cracking. Increased porosity may enhance the crack growth rate.

  • Synthesis, electrochemical and quantum chemical studies of some prepared surfactants based on azodye and Schiff base as corrosion inhibitors for steel in acid medium.

    Three nonionic surfactants based on azodye and Schiff base condensed with poly ethylene glycol were prepared. Their inhibition effect towards corrosion of steel in hydrochloric acid was investigated using electrochemical frequency modulation, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization, quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamic simulation. The data revealed that the prepared surfactants had the ability to inhibit corrosion reaction with good agreement between experimental and computational results. The adsorption of surfactants on the carbon steel surface in 1 M HCl was found to obey Langmuir isotherm. Polarization results showed that these inhibitors act as mixed-type inhibitors.

  • Effect of heat treatment on hydrogen-assisted fracture behavior of PH13-8Mo steel

    Effect of heat treatment on hydrogen-assisted fracture behavior of PH13-8Mo steel was investigated. The results show that hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility of the specimens aged at 600 °C is the lowest compared with that of the specimens aged at 430 °C and 540 °C at the same aging time. With an increase in aging time, the susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement increases for specimens aged at 430 °C while it decreases for specimens aged at 540 °C and 600 °C. Hydrogen-assisted cracks initiate and propagate along lath and prior austenite grain boundaries. In addition, the quantitative relationship between hydrogen embrittlement index and fracture mode is given.

  • High-temperature oxidation of sintered austenitic stainless steel containing boron or yttria

    The present study examines the cyclic oxidation behaviour at 900 ° ° C in air of sintered 316L austenitic stainless steels containing 1 wt.% yttria or 0.6 wt.% boron. The microstructures of the sintered and oxidized samples were characterised by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The two-dimensional image analyses of the pore amount, size and shape was correlated with the oxidation rate. The oxidation resistance of the sintered materials is influenced not only by the porosity characteristics but also by the capability of the alloy element or compound to form a more protective oxide scale. For the conditions chosen in this study, the boron-containing steel was found to provide a strong improvement in the high-temperature cyclic oxidation, which appears to be related to both the high densification favoured by the eutectic reaction and the presence of an iron borate. For the yttria-containing steel, the effect of porosity on oxidation rate was suppressed by the presence of oxides containing yttria and chromium.

  • Determination of the key parameters involved in the formation process of akaganeite in a laboratory-simulated wet-dry cyclic process

    To determine the key parameters of akaganeite formation during a wet-dry cyclic process, cyclic immersion tests and simulated experiments were employed under laboratory conditions. The constituents of rust were characterized using XRD and FTIR. According to the results, green rust (FeII4FeIII2Cl2-x(OH)12+x) was a crucial intermediate product during the formation of akaganeite. The evaporation rate of the electrolyte and the amount of Cl− per area played a key role in the formation of the green rust. Additionally, the required amounts of salt for akaganeite formation were determined from simulation experiments in different relative humidity environments.

  • Effects of flow, Si inhibition, and concurrent corrosion of dissimilar metals on the corrosion of aluminium in the environment following a loss-of-coolant accident

    Experiments were conducted to investigate the aluminium corrosion in the simulated containment pool environment following a loss-of-coolant accident at a nuclear power plant. The results show an identical power law correlation between the corrosion rate and mass transfer coefficient for different flow systems. Aluminium corrosion is inhibited by the silicon leached from the insulation materials, and the inhibition efficiency increases with the silicon concentration due to the increase of Al2SiO5 or SiO2 content in the passivation layer. The concurrent corrosion of copper and iron has little influence on aluminium corrosion while the presence of zinc significantly retards the aluminium corrosion.

    Hot corrosion is a serious problem in gas turbines due to poor quality fuels which contain Na, V, S and Cl. To resolve the problem, Cr-aluminide was coated on IN-738LC superalloy with a two steps pack cementation process. Oxidation behavior and near-surface microstructure of the coating showed consecutive increase in destruction by exposition to Na2SO4, 75Na2SO4 + 25 V2O5 and 70Na2SO4 + 25 V2O5 + 5NaCl (wt.%). Kinetic studies indicated parabolic corrosion rate in salt-less samples due to diffusion. Similar expression for salt-covered samples was assessed for oxide dissolution. Plate-like, broken-plate-like and cauliflower-like morphologies attributed to the corrosion products were observed after exposition to above three salts, respectively.

  • Fabrication of polydimethylsiloxane-derived superhydrophobic surface on aluminium via chemical vapour deposition technique for corrosion protection

    In this paper, a facile method based on the combination of chemical-etching and chemical vapour deposition is developed for the fabrication of superhydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane-derived film on aluminium substrate. It is revealed that the fabricated superhydrophobic aluminium has a static water contact angle as high as 158.7°, a good self-cleaning property and a persistent high corrosion resistance to 3.5 wt.% NaCl solutions. The presented method provides a scalable route to endow metals and alloys with multiple functions, making them suitable for the applications that need waterproof, dustproof and corrosion resistance properties.

  • Pyrophoric behaviour of ultrafine Mo powder

    The pyrophoric behaviour of as-reduced ultrafine Mo powder at 873 K was investigated. The dew point of the H2 gas used in the preparation process had a significant effect on the pyrophoric behaviour of the resulting Mo powder as well as the product compositions. A low dew point of H2 resulted in pyrophoric behaviour and the formation of γ-Mo2N with a small amount of MoO3 forming outside; in contrast, a high dew point of H2 inhibited the pyrophoric behaviour. The morphology of the pyrophoric product was the same as that of the MoO2 raw material.

  • Fabrication of non-wetting surfaces on zinc surface as corrosion barrier

    Two kinds of non-wetting surfaces, super-hydrophobic surface (SHS) and slippery lubricant-infused porous surface (SLIPS), were fabricated on zinc surface with hydrothermal method. Their surface properties were characterized with FE-SEM, XRD, XPS and contact angle meter, and their corrosion protection performances were evaluated with electrochemical measurements. It was demonstrated that both kinds of surfaces present high corrosion resistance to the underlying zinc substrate for the air (or lubricant) layer trapped in film. In comparison with SHS, the SLIPS presents advantage in maintaining stability in corrosive medium. This research provides guidance for the selection of non-wetting surface in practical corrosion protection application.

  • Evaluation of multiple stress corrosion crack interactions by in-situ Digital Image Correlation

    Digital Image Correlation (DIC), Acoustic Emission and Electrochemical Noise measurements were applied to study the growth of multiple intergranular cracks as a colony on an Alloy 600 in a tetrathionate solution. Cracks exceeding 55 μm in length and 0.45 μm in opening were successfully detected by DIC. Moreover, crack population was classified into initiating, active and dormant cracks, active population being the larger one. The emergence and intensification of interactions produced a modification on the colony growth behavior. They range from a mostly surface crack propagation (in the absence of interactions), to in depth propagation predominantly governed by crack shielding.

    The role of acetic acid (HAc) or H+ in initiating the crevice corrosion of N80 carbon steel in CO2-saturated NaCl solution was studied by weight loss and electrochemical measurements. It is demonstrated that crevice corrosion could be initiated by the concentration difference either HAc or H+ between outside and inside the crevice. The corrosion rate inside the crevice becomes higher than that outside the crevice and the total corrosion rate inside and outside the crevice decreases after connection. Crevice corrosion is more severe in the solution with HAc than that in the solution with H2SO4 at the same pH value.

  • Sub-micrometer mesoporous silica containers for active protective coatings on AA 2024-T3

    In the present work, the sub-micrometer containers were prepared using mesoporous silica particles (SBA-15) with parallel channels as reservoir and 8-hydroxyquinoline as corrosion inhibitor. Layer-by-layer assembling was used to construct a shell of polyelectrolytes around the silica particles. Release of 8-hydroxyquinoline from sub-micrometer containers was studied in response to acidic or alkaline pH values. The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) show the improvement of corrosion resistance of epoxy coatings containing sub-micrometer containers. Self-healing ability of the epoxy coatings was provided by sub-micrometer containers, as evidenced by the results of scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET).

  • Bio-corrosion behaviour of oxygen diffusion layer on Ti-6Al-4V during tribocorrosion

    Oxygen diffusion layers (ODL) on Ti-6Al-4V were produced by thermal oxidation at a temperature of 850 °C for three and six hours. ODL formation resulted in a β-Ti to α-Ti transformation, causing an increase in hardness. Polarization and EIS studies in stagnant and tribocorrosion conditions were performed under normal loads of 3–30 N in a phosphate buffered saline solution. In a stagnant condition, a passive bilayer film was formed on samples, which led to a low icorr. During tribocorrosion, the formation of a protective tribofilm resulted in a higher Ecorr and a lower icorr in ODLs compared with Ti-6Al-4V.

    The adsorptive behavior of Urtica Dioica (U.D) leaf extract on the graphene oxide nanosheets (GONs) was examined by experimental and density functional theory (DFT) approaches. Experimental results demonstrated the strengthened adsorption of the Urtica Dioica leaf extract on the GO sheets at acidic pH of 2, leading to the corrosion inhibition of mild steel in chloride solution. It was observed that the inhibition effects of GO-U.D sheets enhanced in the presence of Zn2+ cations in solution and coating phases. The DFT results revealed the physisorption and chemisorption of inhibitors onto GO surfaces.

  • Effects of combined organic and inorganic corrosion inhibitors on the cerium based conversion coating performance on AZ31 Magnesium Alloy: Morphological and corrosion studies

    Magnesium (Mg) AZ31 samples were chemically treated by a series of room temperature cerium based conversion coatings containing Mn(NO3)2·4H2O, Co(NO3)2·6H2O, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The microstructure and corrosion protection properties of different samples were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization test in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. Results demonstrated that the AZ31 Mg alloy sample treated by Ce-Mn-PVA showed the highest corrosion resistance. A denser Ce film with lower crack was precipitated on the sample treated by Ce-Mn-PVA conversion coating.

  • A research on the corrosion and stress corrosion cracking susceptibility of 316L stainless steel exposed to supercritical water

    This study investigated the corrosion and stress corrosion cracking susceptibility of 316L stainless steel exposed to 550 °C and 600 °C supercritical water. XRD, SEM, EDS and EBSD analyses have been carried out to characterize the microstructure of the tested specimens. Results indicate that increasing the test temperature reduced the corrosion and SCC resistance of 316L SS. The oxide scale of corroded specimen shows a duplex structure, and the fracture analysis indicates that the formation of Fe3O4 ‘channels’ in the Fe-Cr spinel layer contributes to the intergranular and transgranular SCC of the materials in 550 °C and 600 °C SCW.

  • Resistance to simulated rain of hydroxyapatite- and calcium oxalate-based coatings for protection of marble against corrosion

    Dissolution in pure and acid rain is among the main environmental degradation processes of marble. Coatings based on hydroxyapatite (HAP) have been proposed to prevent marble corrosion, providing encouraging results. In this paper, the resistance to dissolution was investigated on marble treated with different HAP-treatment formulations and compared to commercial ammonium oxalate. The ability of the coating to prevent corrosion was evaluated by performing wetting/drying cycles, by a custom-designed apparatus simulating rain. When ethanol is added to the solution used to form HAP, a significant reduction in calcium ions leached from marble is found, which is indicative of reduced corrosion.

  • Simulating sulfuric acid dew point corrosion of enamels with different contents of silica

    Corrosion of three bulk enamels with different silica contents in sulfuric acid was studied. Catastrophic corrosion happened for enamel with 54.6 wt% silica. Its weight loss reached 36.90 mg/cm2 after seven-day corrosion. A porous leached layer with tremendous cracks formed at surface during corrosion, which favored acid invading and further corrosion. On the contrary, the durability of enamels with silica content over 60 wt% was guaranteed by their highly connected silicate network and a developed dense gel layer that clogged corrosion pits. Their weight losses were less than 0.2 mg/cm2 after seven-day corrosion.

  • Corrosion Resistance of AISI 316L Coated with an Air-Cured Hydrogen Silsesquioxane Based Spin-On-Glass Enamel in Chloride Environment

    The efficiency of thin hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) −based corrosion barrier coatings on 316L substrates after oxidative thermal curing at 400–550 °C in air was investigated. Infrared spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed that an increasing curing temperature leads to progressing coating densification, accompanied by decreasing barrier properties. Cyclic polarization measurements indicated that defects due to substrate oxidation are detrimental for the substrate passivity. Insufficiently polymerized coatings showed poor chemical stability in neutral salt spray testing and the chemical coating stability increased with curing temperature. Oxidative curing was found inadequate as polymerization treatment of HSQ-based corrosion barrier coatings on 316L substrate.

  • Unexpected effect of citrate ions on the corrosion process of carbon steel in alkaline solutions

    The effect of citrate ions on the passive film stability on carbon steel, at pH 13, was evaluated. The study involved cyclic voltammograms, potentiodynamic polarization curves, micro-Raman spectroscopy and weight-loss tests. No beneficial effects on delaying or inhibiting pitting were observed in the presence of citrate ions. Organic compounds with carboxylate groups are promising corrosion inhibitors. However, the incorporation of citrate ions is clearly harmful to carbon steel in alkaline solutions and accelerates the corrosion process. Citrate ions adsorption is not observed on passive steel. Instead, citrate ions can unexpectedly dissolve the passive layer facilitating the corrosion process.

    Corrosion fatigue crack growth of laser additively-manufactured 316L stainless steel was studied in oxygenated 288 °C water. Effects of heat treatment, crack orientation, and applied cold work were evaluated. Stress-relieved material showed higher crack growth rate than annealed material. Their difference was not significant when the loading frequency was high. When the loading frequency decreased, the effects of material conditions created by heat treatment, crack orientation and applied cold work slightly increased. Retained unrecrystallized grains in an annealed material did not affect significantly the cracking susceptibility. High-temperature recrystallization treatment of an AM 316L component may be necessary for nuclear applications.

  • Role of volatilization of molybdenum oxides during the cyclic oxidation of high-Mo containing Ni-based single crystal superalloys

    The cyclic oxidation behavior of two high-Mo containing Ni-based single crystal superalloys with different Al contents at 1100 °C has been investigated. The higher formation tendency of the continuous and dense α-Al2O3 scales in the alloy with higher Al content can prevent the volatilization of MoO3 through decreasing the diffusion of Mo. Besides the spallation of oxide scales, the volatilization of refractory metal oxides can also result in the mass loss of the samples in the cyclic oxidation tests, especially in the Ni-based single crystal superalloys with high contents of refractory elements and weak formation tendency of continuous α-Al2O3 scales.

    Nb-18Si-24Ti-2Cr-2Al-2Hf (at.%) alloy was fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM). Results showed that an ultra-fined microstructure was achieved by SLM. After oxidation at 1250 °C for 50 h, the weight gains of Nb-Si based alloys via SLM and vacuum induction melting (VIM) were 96.48 mg/cm2 and 198.91 mg/cm2, respectively. Compared with the VIM alloy, the SLM alloy exhibited a slower oxidation kinetic rate, featured by the formation of a more compact oxide scale without spallation. The improvement in the oxidation resistance was attributed to the microstructure refinement.

    The mechanism and sensitivity of long period fiber gratings (LPFG) corrosion sensor, which is made by coating LPFG with an inner layer of silver and an outer layer of Fe-C, are investigated in this study. Two silver and three Fe-C thicknesses were considered. Results indicate that a linear relationship is present between the change in the resonant wavelength and the mass loss of the outer Fe-C layer within certain ranges. The corrosion sensitivity and service life of LPFG corrosion sensor depend on the thickness of both silver and Fe-C layers.

    In order to study the effect of Cr and Y2O3 addition on the oxidation behavior of novel Co-20Cr-10Al (wt.%) oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) superalloys, an isothermal oxidation test was carried out at 900 °C in air. The addition of Cr altered the oxide scale from the multilayered scale with an external Co oxide/CoAl2O4 and an inner Al2O3 to a single Al2O3 scale. Y2O3 addition increased oxidation mass gain slightly but improved spallation resistance of the external Al2O3 scale.

  • Building Direction Dependence of Corrosion Resistance Property of Ti–6Al–4V Alloy Fabricated by Electron Beam Melting

    Electrochemical measurements in 1 M HCl solution were performed to investigate the corrosion behaviour of Ti–6Al–4V alloy fabricated by electron beam melting (EBM) with cylindrical axes deviating from the building direction by 0°, 45°, 55°, and 90°. Microstructure characterization before and after the tests was carried out by using a variety of methods The results suggested that the corrosion resistance of EBM alloy in 1 M HCl solution increased slightly in the order of 45°, 90°, 55°, and 0°. Such difference can be ascribed to the grain boundary density and β phase constitution, which varied with the building direction.

  • Equivalent hydrogen fugacity during electrochemical charging of some martensitic advanced high-strength steels

    A new thermal desorption spectroscopy apparatus was used to study hydrogen in four martensitic advanced high-strength steels (designated MS980, MS1180, MS1300 and MS1500) after gaseous hydrogen charging, and after hydrogen charging electrochemically in 0.1 M NaOH and in 3.5 wt% NaCl. The hydrogen concentration did not correlate strongly with steel strength. For MS1500, a relationship was derived between equivalent hydrogen fugacity and the applied charging overpotential. Also for MS1500, the trap binding energies were evaluated to be 26.4 kJ mol−1 and 61.0 kJ mol−1, which were interpreted as dislocation and interface hydrogen traps.

    Effect of irradiation on corrosion of 304 nuclear grade stainless steel (304NG SS) in simulated primary water of pressurized water reactor was investigated. The investigation was conducted by comparing the microstructure of the oxide scale formed on the steel irradiated to different doses by proton. The results revealed that increasing irradiation dose promoted both the corrosion and intergranular corrosion of 304NG SS. This is attributed to the irradiation induced defects as well as the Cr depletion at the grain boundary in the steel.

    Fracture micro-mechanisms and crack path of embrittled austenitic steel 304L by liquid sodium strained at 4.2 × 10−7 m.s−1 and 573 K are investigated underneath the fracture surface by transmission electron microscopy down to the nanoscale. Automated crystal orientation and phase mapping analyses show that abundant martensitic transformation (γ austenite → α’ martensite) as well as mechanical twinning occur during the deformation of austenite and play a major role in the fracture process. A correlation between the fracture surface features and the underlying microstructural interfaces is evidenced, strengthening the conclusion that liquid metal embrittlement by sodium of austenitic steels is basically an interfacial cracking phenomenon.

    The influences of crystallographic texture and grain size on corrosion behaviour were investigated using the Mg alloy AZ31 sheets produced in the following ways: as-extruded (AR), cross rolling (CR) and unidirectional rolling (UR). The corrosion rate was measured for immersion of the AZ31 sheets in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution using hydrogen evolution, potentiodynamic polarisation curves, and mass loss. The corrosion rate of the AZ31 sheets decreased in the following order: AR, CR, UR. The decrease in corrosion rate was attributed to an increase in basal plane intensity in the crystallographic texture and the reduced grain size.

  • In situ Monitoring of Crevice Corrosion Morphology of Type 316L Stainless Steel and Repassivation Behavior Induced by Sulfate Ions

    To analyze the repassivation mechanism induced by SO42− ions, in situ monitoring of the crevice corrosion morphology on Type 316L stainless steel was performed. The repassivation of the crevice corrosion was observed when the solution was changed from 1 M NaCl to 0.88 M Na2SO4 or to 1 M NaCl-0.88 M Na2SO4. The active dissolution of Type 316L stainless steel was suppressed by SO42− ions at pH 0.4 in anodic polarization measurements. The transition from active to passive states inside the crevice was likely promoted by SO42− ions.

  • Effect and role of alloyed Nb on the air oxidation behaviour of Ni-Cr-Fe alloys at 1000 °C

    Ni-25Cr alloys alloyed with Fe (5 wt.% and 15 wt.%) and Nb (0, 1 and 2 wt.%) were designed and their oxidation behaviour was evaluated at 1000 °C. Results reveal that alloyed Nb has a positive impact on oxidation in both the kinetics and oxide scale structures. The parabolic rate constant kp of Nb-alloyed Ni-25Cr-15Fe alloys are nearly one-fourth the value for Nb-free alloy. The oxide scales change from spinel-included multi-layers in the Nb-free alloy to a much thinner Cr2O3 single-layer in the Nb-alloyed alloys. NbC precipitates and slightly dissolved Nb account for these changes.

  • Oxidative protection of carbon fibers with carborane-containing polymer

    To improve the oxidation resistance of carbon fibers, a series of carborane-containing polymer-based coatings were prepared. The oxidation resistance and microstructure of the coatings were investigated. According to XPS, FT-IR and XRD analysis, the high oxidation resistance of the polymer-based coatings was attributed to the boron oxide protective layer formed from the oxidation of carborane groups in the coating. Ceramic coatings were prepared from heat treatment of polymer-based coatings under argon at 1300 °C for 2 h. The great oxidation resistance of the ceramic coating was attributed to the existence of boron carbide in coating.

  • Electrochemical corrosion behaviour of (100), (110) and (111) Fe3Al single crystals in sulphuric acid

    In the present work the electrochemical corrosion behaviour of iron aluminide single crystals from a binary Fe3Al alloy in 0.5 M H2SO4 containing naturally dissolved O2 was investigated. The single crystal samples used in the experiments had surface orientations parallel to the low-index planes (100), (110) and (111) and were analysed by potentiodynamic polarization as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results obtained showed that corrosion rates followed the trend (100) < (110) ≈ (111). Examination of the corroded surfaces revealed the presence of distinct patterns on each single crystal which indicated that the dissolution process was influenced by surface crystallography.

    The growth of protective α-Al2O3 scales on the NiCrAl-base alloy 602 CA at 1100 °C and 1200 °C was promoted by multi-step oxidation treatments. Different microstructural changes were observed during high temperature exposures in the pre-oxidised specimens as compared to the bare specimens. A coupled thermodynamic-kinetic model was employed to describe the influence of pre-oxidation on the microstructural evolution in the alloy. The model was able to correctly predict the mechanisms of the dissolution and re-precipitation of the carbides in the pre-oxidised and bare specimens.

  • Micro-electrochemical investigation on the role of Mg in sacrificial corrosion protection of 55mass%Al-Zn-Mg coated steel

    The effects of Mg on the anodic dissolution behavior of the 55mass%Al-Zn coating layer were determined by in situ observation during galvanostatic polarization. The Zn-‍rich phases were observed to corrode at lower potentials than the dissolution potential region of the Al-rich matrix phases, and the dissolution duration of the Zn-rich phases was prolonged by Mg addition. Moreover, the corrosion products of the 55mass%Al-Zn-Mg coating layer were suggested to inhibit the oxygen reduction reaction on the steel substrate. The sacrificial corrosion protection mechanisms due to the addition of Mg to the 55mass%Al-‍Zn coating layer were discussed.

  • Diffusion of Ta and its influence on oxidation behavior of nanocrystalline coatings with different Ta, Y and Al contents

    Oxidation behavior of a Ta-containing nanocrystalline coating with different contents of Y and Al on the N5 single-crystal superalloy is investigated at 1050 and 1150 °C. Results indicate that the refractory element, Ta, is very active during oxidation. It diffuses easily from the interior of the nanocrystalline coating to the interface of coating/scale in the form of γ′-Ni3(Al, Ta), where it is oxidized and ruins the compactness of oxide scale. Adding moderate amount of Y retards the movement and oxidation of Ta, thus increases oxidation resistance. Such retarding effect is strengthened by increasing Al content, while weakened by increasing temperature.

    The influences of alloyed Lu, Hf and Cr on the oxidation and spallation behavior of NiAl were investigated. Although Lu has a “block effect” of Al as Hf does, the oxidation rate of Lu-doped NiAl is significantly higher, due to: (1) inhibitation of θ- to α-Al2O3 transformation in early oxidation stage; (2) stronger scale grain refinement effect and enhanced oxygen transport rate. Segregation of S and C occurs not only at the alloy/scale interface, but also within the scale. Both Lu and Hf can significantly improve the scale adherence. However, This beneficial effect can be easily overcompensated by Cr.

  • Effects of chloride transients on stress corrosion crack in pressure vessel low alloy steels in high temperature water

    This paper evaluated the effects of chloride transients that may occur in boiling water reactor on stress corrosion cracking of pressure vessel low alloy steels. Crack growth rate and the delayed cracking response were enhanced by chloride transient in normal water chemistry while no chloride effect was observed in hydrogen water chemistry. The effects of chloride concentration, stress intensity factor, corrosion potential, and steel heat on the crack growth were discussed. The results from this work provide direct inputs to crack growth disposition models for low alloy steels, water chemistry guidelines and the plant operation practice during chloride transient.

  • Comprehensive screening of Mg corrosion inhibitors

    This work presents the results of a systematic screening for magnesium corrosion inhibitors. The ability to form stable soluble complexes with Feii/iii was considered on first place when choosing the compounds for hydrogen evolution tests. Inhibiting effect of 151 individual compounds was tested towards six alloys (AZ31, AZ91, AM50, WE43, ZE41 and Elektron 21) and three grades of pure magnesium. Newly identified and previously reported inhibitors are ranked by their inhibiting efficiency and compared with Cr (VI) reference. A number of new inhibitors are discovered with efficiency exceeding that of chromate.

  • Oxidation behavior of NiCrAlY coatings prepared by arc ion plating using various substrate biases: Effects of chemical composition and thickness of the coatings

    NiCrAlY coatings with various Cr and Al contents were prepared on Ni-based superalloy K438G from a single NiCrAlY target by adjusting the substrate bias during high vacuum arc ion plating. The oxidation behavior of the coatings follows the oxide map laws proposed by Wallwork and Hed rather than the guide line based on Cr/Al = 4. As the coatings degrade due to Al depletion, formation of Cr2O3 scales beneath the external α-Al2O3 scales was observed. The mechanism for the oxidation of Ni-Cr-Al alloys is discussed.

  • Three indazole derivatives as corrosion inhibitors of copper in a neutral chloride solution

    In this work, three halogeno-indazole compounds were investigated for corrosion inhibition of copper in 3.0 wt% NaCl solution using potentiodynamic polarization measurement, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The electrochemical results revealed that all of these organics are mixed-type inhibitors with an inhibitive ability order: 4-CIA > 4-BIA > 4-FIA, which was further confirmed by observations with field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). Their favourable performance is ascribed to the formation of inhibitor-adsorption films on copper. Furthermore, theoretical calculations showed the electronic structure of studied compounds and their optimized adsorption configurations on the copper surface.

  • The effect of reversion heat treatment on the degree of sensitisation for aluminium alloy AA5083

    A detailed study of reversion heat treatment on a naturally sensitised field retrieved AA5083 (Al-Mg-Mn) sample was carried out. The reversion temperatures studied were between 150 and 240 °C, which span the β-phase (Mg2Al3) transformation temperature. The degree of sensitisation (DoS) prior to and after reversion was investigated via the nitric acid mass loss test (NAMLT); revealing the effect of reversion heat treatment was principally dictated by reversion temperature. The DoS of reversion treated samples was correlated to the grain boundary β-phase continuity, as assessed by quantitative electron microscopy herein.
