  • Photoresponsive self-assembly of a β-cyclodextrin derivative with an azobenzene terminal group in water

    We report the photoresponsive self-assembly of a β-cyclodextrin derivative containing an azobenzene terminal group with an oligoethylene glycol linker (Azo-EG-βCD). Azo-EG-βCD was synthesized, and its aggregation was investigated using several techniques including TEM analysis, DLS and other spectral measurements. In a freshly prepared aqueous solution, Azo-EG-βCD self-assembled into a network-like structure by forming intermolecular host–guest inclusions that transformed into vesicles upon aging because of hydrogen bonding. Transformation from trans-azo to cis-azo using UV light induced the dissociation of azobenzene in the β-CD cavity, and the aggregate transformed into vesicles. The construction of a photoresponsive self-assembly may provide a unimolecular host–guest complexation model in stimuli-responsive host–guest self-assembly.

  • Removing of Direct Red 83:1 using α- and HP-α-CDs polymerized with epichlorohydrin: Kinetic and equilibrium studies

    The adsorption properties of two cyclodextrin-epichlorohydrin polymers to remove Direct Red 83:1 textile dye from wastewater solutions was evaluated. Adsorption studies were performed in a batch reactor, and the efficiency of the polymers under different parametric values such as contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial dye concentration, pH of initial solution and temperature was followed by spectrophotometry. Both Langmuir and Freundlich equations were used to fit the equilibrium isotherms and the kinetic data were analyzed by the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. Adsorption process follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic and was influenced by intraparticle diffusion model, dye concentration and contact time, reaching equilibrium within the first 30 min. Experimental data were better fitted to Freundlich isotherm model than to Langmuir and Temkin isotherms. Since about 93% of dye removal was achieved under optimized conditions, the α-cyclodextrin-epichlorohydrin polymer seems to be a useful device for removing Direct Red 83:1 from aqueous solutions and industrial effluents.

  • Preparation and characterization of ultrathin Pt/CeO2/Bi2WO6 nanobelts with enhanced photoelectrochemical properties

    One-dimensional ultrathin Pt/CeO2/Bi2WO6 nanobelts with an exceptional photoelectrochemical performance have been controllably and delicately fabricated via a simple two-step method. The as-prepared nanobelts were systematically characterized by TG, XRD, FT-IR, SEM, HRTEM, BET, XPS, UV-vis, PL, TOC, HPLC and EIS. The photocatalytic activity of resultant samples has been determined sufficiently through decomposition of methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB) dyes. The enhanced photocatalytic performance is significantly improved by loading of Pt nanoparticles (NPs) on CeO2/Bi2WO6 nanobelts, and the optimal Pt content is also evaluated. In photocatalysis, the mechanism of ultrathin Pt/CeO2/Bi2WO6 nanobelts for the visible light photocatalytic enhancement is thoroughly elucidated. The nanobelts with such attributes could not only lead to the faster development for constructing highly efficient photocatalysts but also aid in our understanding and optimization of their properties.

  • Label-free fluorescent sensor based on aptamer and thiazole orange for the detection of tetracycline

    A label-free fluorescence aptasensor based on tetracycline-binding aptamers and thiazole orange (TO) was established for the selective and sensitive detection of tetracycline. TO is essentially nonfluorescent in aqueous solution, while TO can intercalate into the tetracycline-binding aptamers with G-quadruplex structures causing a high fluorescence emission intensity. In the presence of the target tetracycline, the specific recognition and binding of aptamers with the targets induce the conformational changes of aptamers from G-quadruplex structures to hairpin structures. Such target-induced conformational changes lead to the quenching of the fluorescence emission from TO, which thus constitutes the mechanism of the aptamer-based label-free fluorescence biosensor for specific target analysis. Under the optimum conditions, the proposed fluorescence assay shows a linear range from 0.05 to 100 μg mL−1 with a detection limit of 0.029 μg mL−1. The cross-reactivity of this approach against other common antibiotics was negligible compared with the response to tetracycline, proving the excellent selectivity of this label-free fluorescent aptasensor. When used in samples of tetracycline-spiked raw milk, this method demonstrated the satisfactory recoveries between 90.0% and 108.0%, and the results were in full agreement with those from HPLC, confirming the high reliability and feasibility of this bioassay for rapid screening of tetracycline in various practical applications. Using the structure-switching aptamers and the fluorescent intercalator of nucleic acids, the proposed label-free strategy avoids all complicated covalent modifications or chemical labeling, and thus offers obvious advantages of simplicity, convenience, specificity and cost efficiency.

  • Orange electrophosphorescence based on bis(3,5-dimethylphenyl)pyridine iridium (III) complexes for non-halogenated solution processable phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes

    Two heteroleptic iridium complexes, (dmppy)2Ir(tmd) and (dmppy)2Ir(acac), which consist of phenylpyridin (ppy) as main ligand with dimethyl substituents on both the phenyl ring and the pyridine ring, and heptanedione (tmd) and acetyl acetonate (acac) as ancillary ligands were synthesized and characterized regarding their suitability as orange organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The photoluminescence (PL) of (dmppy)2Ir(tmd) and (dmppy)2Ir(acac) produced orange emissions with maximum emission peaks at 577 and 570 nm, respectively. The highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy (LUMO) levels of (dmppy)2Ir(tmd) and (dmppy)2Ir(acac) were −5.03/-2.83 and −5.02/-2.77 eV, respectively. An optimized non-halogenated solution-processed (dmppy)2Ir(tmd) device showed a high current efficiency of 52.7 cd/A and exhibits an efficiency of 89% when compared to a vacuum-deposited device that showed 66.7 cd/A at 1000 cd/m2.

  • Synthesis of yellow fluorescent dyes derived from benzoxanthene that can be used in colour converters for remote phosphor LED systems

    The current commercially available yellow organic dyes are not stable enough to be used for remote phosphor LED applications. Therefore new yellow benzoxanthene dicarboximide dyes to convert blue light from LED into light of longer wavelengths were synthesized. The spectral properties of the dyes and their stability in PET films were examined. The compounds showed high photoluminescence quantum yield and above all superior photostability under operation conditions (10% reduction in photoluminescence at 450 nm irradiance of 0.016 W/cm2 at 60 °C). With extrapolated lifetimes up to 27000 h, a huge improvement in stability was established when compared to the commercially available yellow dyes exhibiting lifetimes lower than 1000 h.

  • Microwave-assisted multicomponent tandem polymerization for rapid preparation of biodegradable fluorescent organic nanoparticles with aggregation-induced emission feature and their biological imaging applications

    The fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature have recently attracted the most research interest owing to their well designability, outstanding optical properties and great potential for biomedical applications. Therefore, the development of novel strategies that could facilely fabricate AIE-active functional materials with high efficiency should be of great importance for their biomedical applications. In this work, a novel strategy that based on the microwave-assisted multicomponent tandem polymerization (MCP) has been developed to fabricate the biodegradable FONs with AIE feature. The AIE-active dye (NH2-PhE-NH2) with two amino groups, hydrophilic dialdehyde-terminating copolymer (PEG-PCL-CHO) and diethyl phosphite were successfully conjugated via a “one-pot” microwave-assisted Kabachnik–Fields (KF) reaction under rather mild conditions (e.g. air atmosphere, catalysts-free and solvent-free) within short reaction time (5 min). The obtained PEG-PCL-PhE FONs were characterized by a series of techniques. Results demonstrated that PEG-PCL-PhE FONs possess great water dispersibility, excellent optical properties as well as low cytotoxicity. Taken together, we developed a novel MCP strategy that based on the microwave-assisted KF reaction to fabricate AIE-active FONs with great physicochemical and biological properties. These AIE-active FONs are of great potential for biological imaging applications. Moreover, this strategy could also be adopted to fabricate many other AIE-active functional materials owing to its simple operation, high efficiency, short reaction time and substrate diversity.

  • Derivatives of carbazole and Chloropyridine exhibiting aggregation induced emission enhancement and deep-blue delayed fluorescence

    New carbazole-chloropyridine donor-acceptor compounds were obtained with the yields of 49–77% by a one-step catalyst-free nucleophilic substitution reaction of pentachloropyridine and carbazole. The structures of the compounds were confirmed by 1H, 13C NMR and IR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis was performed for monosubstituted derivative of pentachloropyridine. Computational studies revealed high theoretic triplet energy levels with small singlet-triplet energy gaps. Electrochemical, thermal and photophysical properties of the compounds were studied. The solid films of the compounds exhibited fluorescence in the range of 435–465 nm. Disubstituted and trisubstituted derivatives formed molecular glasses with glass transition temperatures of 93 °C and 134 °C, respectively. Singlet-triplet energy splitting of the obtained compounds were in the range from 0.06 eV to 0.31 eV depending on the number of attached carbazolyl moieties. Triplet energy levels of the compounds were estimated to be in the range from 3.05 eV to 3.08 eV. The mono-substituted derivative exhibited aggregation induced emission enhancement and thermally-activated delayed fluorescence. It exhibited deep blue emission with chromaticity coordinates of (0.17, 0.13) and 16% photoluminescence quantum yield in the solid state.

  • Cu2+-selective fluorescent probe based on the hydrolysis of semicarbazide derivative of 2-(2-aminophenyl)benzothiazole

    A new Cu2+-selective reaction-based fluorescent probe based on the semicarbazide-bearing derivative of 2-(2-aminophenyl)benzothiazole 1 has been developed. Designed probe 1 exhibited turn-on-type fluorescence signaling behavior that was more prominent toward Cu2+ ions than to other environmentally relevant metal ions. The signaling of probe 1 was due to the Cu2+-induced hydrolysis of semicarbazide moiety to form its strongly fluorescent parent dye. Cu2+ signaling of probe 1 was not influenced by the presence of commonly encountered metal ions, and the detection limit was 1.71 × 10−8 M (1.1 ppb). As a practical application, the determination of Cu2+ in simulated semiconductor wastewater was conducted using a smartphone as a portable signal detection tool. For the color test analysis, enhanced reproducibility of Cu2+-sensing was realized using the grayscale image rather than the red, green, or blue channel image.

  • Emission enhancement of LiLaMo2O8:Eu3+ phosphor by co-doping with Bi3+ and Sm3+ ions

    A series of LiLaMo2O8:Eu3+, R (R = Bi3+ and Sm3+) phosphors are synthesized by a high temperature solid-state reaction method in air. The crystal structures, fluorescence lifetimes, and luminescence properties are investigated in detail. LiLaMo2O8:Eu3+ phosphor with excitation 395 nm shows red light in the range of 525–725 nm and it photoluminescence intensity may be enhanced ∼2.35 times due to energy transfer (ET) from a sensitizing species (Bi3+ or Sm3+) to Eu3+ ion after Bi3+ or Sm3+ ion is co-doped. The optimal Eu3+, Bi3+, and Sm3+ ion concentrations are 4%. Luminous mechanism of LiLaMo2O8:Eu3+, R (R = Bi3+ and Sm3+) phosphors and ET processes between Eu3+ and Bi3+/Sm3+ ions are analyzed and explained by their excitation and emission spectra and energy level diagrams of Eu3+, Bi3+, and Sm3+ ions. The experimental results indicate that LiLaMo2O8:Eu3+, R (R = Bi3+ and Sm3+) phosphors may be used as potenial red emitting materials for white light emitting diodes (LEDs) based on either a near ultraviolet (∼395 nm) or blue (∼465 nm) chip.

  • Carbazole/phenylpyridine hybrid compound as dual role of efficient host and ligand of iridium complex: Well matching of host-dopant for solution-processed green phosphorescent OLEDs

    A new bipolar transport material of 9,9'-(4-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,3-phenylene)bis(9H-carbazole) (2,4-dCzPPy) is designed and synthesized through a simple catalyst free C-N coupling reaction. The carbazole/phenylpyridine hybrid 2,4-dCzPPy is functionalized as dual role of efficient host material and cyclometalated ligands for green emissive Iridium (III) complex of bis(9,9'-(4-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,3-phenylene)bis(9H-carbazole))(acetylacetonato) Ir(dCzPPy)2(acac). Their thermal, photophysical, electrochemical, and electrolumiescent (EL) properties are fully investigated. The D-π-A structure of bipolar compound of 2,4-dCzPPy suppresses the direct intramolecular interaction between the donor and acceptor subunits to give high triplet energy of 2.70 eV. Besides, solution processable electrophosphorescent devices by using 2,4-dCzPPy/Ir(dCzPPy)2(acac) as host/dopant to form emissive layers at a dopant concentration of 8 wt% show a maximum luminescence of 28622 cd/m2 at 10.3 V and maximum current efficiency of 31.8 cd/A, which is significantly higher than other host/dopant combinations, such as 21 cd/A of 4,4′-bis(9-carbazolyl)biphenyl (CBP):Ir(dCzPPy)2(acac) and 15 cd/A of 2,4-dCzPPy:tris(2-4-tolyl phenylpyridine) iridium (Ir(mppy)3), suggesting the well matching of the new host/dopant system which involves 2,4-dCzPPy both as the host matrix and the ligand of phosphorescent emitter.

  • Evaluation of the photophysicochemical properties and photodynamic therapy activity of nanoconjugates of zinc phthalocyanine linked to AuNPs–GSH and Au3Ag1NPs–GSH

    We report on the synthesis of glutathione capped gold (AuNPs–GSH) and gold–silver nanoparticles (Au3Ag1NPs–GSH) and their covalent attachment to Zn monocarboxyphenoxy phthalocyanine (1) via amide bond formation. The photophysicochemical properties and photodynamic therapy (PDT) activity of the complex and its nanoconjugates were assessed. The conjugates afforded improved triplet and singlet quantum yield as well as PDT activity (except for 1-Au3Ag1NPs which afforded decreased activity) in comparison to the complex.

  • Bioinspired water-soluble two-photon fluorophores

    The structural modification of plant pigments allows the development of new functional dyes with tailored photophysical properties. Two-photon excitation fluorescence microscopy has emerged as an important technique, but requires the use of fluorophores having large two-photon absorption cross-sections in water. This feature is rarely found in natural or artificial dyes, but betalains, the main pigments of beetroots and some species of fluorescent flowers, can be modified to produce water-soluble two-photon fluorophores. Herein we describe the semisynthesis and photophysical characterization of two water-soluble artificial coumarinic betalains. The excitation of these compounds in the near-infrared results in yellow fluorescence with two-photon cross-sections in water of 323 GM and 179 GM.

  • The wash-off of dyeings using interstitial water Part 5: Residual dyebath and wash-off liquor generated during the application of disperse dyes and reactive dyes to polyester/cotton fabric

    Both 2% and 5% omf dyeings of polycotton fabric which had been produced using commercial grade disperse dyes and reactive dyes can be washed-off using two, novel processes that utilise polyamide beads. The bead wash-off processes provided dyeings that were of similar colour, depth of shade and fastness compared to those which had been subjected to a conventional reduction clearing process in the case of the disperse dyes and a conventional wash-off in the case of the reactive dyes. The wastewater obtained from the bead wash-off of disperse dyes contained considerably lower concentrations of chloride ion as well as lower TDS compared to that secured using a conventional reduction clearing process, which was attributed to the beads having adsorbed vagrant chloride ions. In contrast, bead wash-off of reactive dyes did not reduce either the chloride ion concentration nor TDS content of the wastewater produced, because of the swamping effect of the very high chloride ion concentration. Bead wash-off also enabled significant reductions in both heat energy and water consumption to be achieved.

  • Effects of alkyl chain length on aggregation-induced emission, self-assembly and mechanofluorochromism of tetraphenylethene modified multifunctional β-diketonate boron complexes

    Two tetraphenylethene functionalized β-diketonate boron complexes C2TPE-CAR and C16TPE-CAR that were bridged by carbazole bearing alkyl chains of different lengths, have been designed and successfully synthesized. The two donor–acceptor luminogens showed typical twisted intramolecular charge-transfer (TICT) emission. In particular, they exhibited alkyl-dependent aggregation-induced emission (AIE), self-assembly and mechanofluorochromic (MFC) properties. Results showed that C16TPE-CAR with a long hexadecyl chain formed gels in certain solvents and also exhibited gelation-induced emission enhancement. H-aggregates were formed driven by the synergistic effect of π-stacking interaction and van der Waals force in the gel phase. However, C2TPE-CAR, which possessed the short ethyl group, exhibited no self-assembly behavior. Simple mechanical force could change the emission color of C2TPE-CAR and C16TPE-CAR powders from initial bright yellow (571 and 558 nm) to final red (617 and 610 nm), thus high contrast mechanofluorochromism with large spectral shifts of up to 46 and 52 nm, respectively, was observed. The powder XRD studies showed that the MFC behavior might be switched reversibly under the stimulus of external force because of crystalline-amorphous phase transformation.

  • Highly efficient fluorene/indole-based hole transport materials for green PhOLEDs

    Three hole transport materials, FIPN-p-PCz, FIPN-p-TPA and FIPN-DPCz, incorporating fluorene/indole core with carbazole or triphenylamine unit were synthesized and fully characterized. The photophysical properties, thermal properties and electrochemical properties of these three compounds were fully investigated. The FIPN-based hole transport materials show high thermal stability (Td > 420 °C) and appropriate highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level (∼-5.2 eV). Green phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) using these FIPN-based derivatives were fabricated to investigate the device performance, compared with NPB as the reference hole transport material. It turned out that the devices using these three compounds exhibited superior performance than that of the NPB-based PhOLED device. Especially, the FIPN-p-PCz based device showed outstanding electroluminescence performance with the maximum current efficiency and external quantum efficiency of 53.7 cd/A and 17.3%, respectively, which was almost twice that of the NPB based device.

  • Dicationic and monocationic benzobisthiazolium salts as potential NLO chromophores

    Dicationic salts derived from linear and angular benzobisthiazole skeleton were prepared by methylation under microwave conditions. The following condensation with aromatic aldehydes afforded two-armed conjugated molecules, which represent quadrupolar systems. Monocationic angular derivatives were also prepared to study the differences in properties between the quadrupolar and dipolar structures. Absorption and fluorescence characteristics were determined, in the case of dipolar derivatives solvatochromism was studied as well. Quantum chemical calculation of absorption spectra and nonlinear optical properties (first and second hyperpolarizability) were performed. The predicted values correlate well with the experimental ones and helped to explain the split character of the main band in absorption spectra of quadrupolar angular derivatives. Although high values of second hyperpolarizability are predicted for the linear compounds, their very low solubility in common solvents is a strongly limiting factor when practical use is considered. On the contrary, the applicability of one dicationic and one monocationic angular dye, with better solubility, was successfully verified in confocal laser scanning microscopy with nonlinear excitation.

  • Bromo-pentamethine as mitochondria-targeted photosensitizers for cancer cell apoptosis with high efficiency

    Mitochondria play essential roles in cellular energy supply and produce 90% of reactive oxygen species. A mitochondrial targeted photosensitizer is greatly beneficial to improve the photodynamic therapeutic effect via apoptosis. Herein bromo-pentamethine dyes (λabs > 650 nm) are designed as mitochondria-localized anticancer photosensitizers. Cell experiments demonstrate that Cy-Br localizes in mitochondria with very low cytotoxicity in dark, and induces cancer cells apoptosis under light with IC50 as low as 62 nM, much better than commercial Ce6 (3706 nM). Bromo-group could enhance the quantum yield of reactive oxygen species. The high efficiency might provide a new clue to develop new photosensitizers.

  • Highly fluorescent single crystals of a 4-ethoxy-1,3-thiazole

    4-Ethoxy-2-(pyridin-2-yl)-5-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)thiazole (EPTT) was prepared in a four-step synthetic protocol. Column shaped single crystals of EPTT were obtained from a saturated EtOH solution. Both single crystals and a THF solution of EPTT were investigated in terms of their photophysical properties and electronic structure. The crystals showed very intense fluorescence upon photoexcitation as well as a red shifted emission maximum compared to a THF solution of EPTT (single crystals: λem = 523 nm, ΦFL = 0.82, THF solution λem = 477 nm, ΦFL = 0.67). Quantum chemical methods were then employed to unravel the underlying fundamental transitions and explain the experimental results. Calculations for a small dye cluster modeled after the x-ray crystal structure predicted three dark intermolecular CT states, S1-S3, below the intramolecular CT state (S4) for EPTT in the crystalline state. Photoexcitation and subsequent relaxation along the excited states relaxation pathways may populate the low-lying dark intermolecular CT states, which in consequence leads to an exciton moving along the stacked dyes in the crystal. This finding explains the significantly enhanced red-shift of the solid-state fluorescence of EPTT compared to the dissolved dye.

  • Dye-liquid-crystal-based biosensing for quantitative protein assay

    Dye liquid crystals (DLCs) have been extensively investigated in the field of liquid crystal display, but their potential in biosensing has not been explored. To provide insights into the potential of DLCs as a means of biosensing material, a DLC-based biosensor was developed for protein detection and quantitation. Unlike dye-doped LCs, the DLC used in this study contains an azobenzene LC molecule chemically modified with two azo groups as chromophores, enabling the DLC to exhibit unique optical anisotropy and dichroic absorption at 470 nm, which were exploited in the quantitation of bovine serum albumin (BSA). The change in orientation of DLC molecules from the homeotropic to a disrupted state by BSA immobilized on the aligning-layer surface was evaluated in terms of the relative loss in transmittance, expressed by the standard parameter S%, due to the absorption as well as scattering of light. The DLC-based protein assay was capable of determining the BSA concentration, with which S% varied linearly between 1 μg/ml and 7.5 μg/ml. When the DLC molecules were reoriented from a BSA-disrupted state to the homeotropic alignment by an externally applied electric field, a linear correlation between S% and BSA concentration could be also derived from the voltage–transmittance plots. The unique electro-optical properties of the intrinsically dichroic DLC are promising toward the development of a simple and reliable sensing platform for the quantitative analysis of biomolecules.

  • Carbazole-based small molecule electron donors: Syntheses, characterization, and material properties

    Efficient synthetic methods for carbazole-based small molecule electron donors with donor–acceptor (D–A) and A–D–A type structures were developed. In order to study the relation between chemical structures and material properties, the prepared compounds were characterized in detail using absorption spectroscopy, differential pulse voltammetry, and computational methods. In addition, symmetrical A–D–A type compounds were tested as an active layer component in bulk heterojunction based organic solar cell (OSC) devices with conventional structure. The results show that the two compound types have many similar properties. However, the extended molecular structure of A–D–A type compounds offer better film forming properties and higher molar absorption coefficients compared with the D–A type materials. Furthermore, the attachment of fluoro substituents in the A units has a positive effect on all solar cell device parameters. Moreover, the computational studies revealed that the molecular structures are twisted between the central carbazole D unit and π-bridge which may result in inefficient intramolecular charge transfer and, also, relatively limited short-circuit currents in OSC devices.

  • PVP-capped Pt NPs-depended catalytic nanoprobe for the simultaneous detection of Hg2+ and Ag+

    Mercury ions (Hg2+) and silver ions (Ag+) are assigned to the highest toxicity class of heavy metal pollution. Here, a novel sensor is firstly developed for the simultaneous detection of coexisting Ag+ and Hg2+ in aqueous solution, depending on the catalytic properties of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP)-capped platinum nanoparticle (Pt NPs) and the strong chelation of EDTA to Hg2+. PVP-capped Pt NPs exhibit uniform morphology and possess great intrinsic peroxidase-like activity in comparison to citrate-capped Pt NPs, PVP-capped Ru NPs and Ir NPs, attributing to the enhanced catalytic efficiency determined by loosely packed PVP and the excellent catalytic decomposition activities of H2O2. Hg2+ and Ag+ could induce remarkable inhibition of the peroxidase-like activity of Pt NPs by changing the electronic state of the active sites through metallophilic interactions. The selective and simultaneous detection of Hg2+ and Ag+ was realized via the addition of ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA), which could successfully mask Hg2+ but had negligible effect on Ag+. The proposed approach inspires new designs of novel catalytic nanoprobes for the multi-analyte assay of heavy metal ions.

  • Water soluble chemosensor for Ca2+ based on aggregation-induced emission characteristics and its fluorescence imaging in living cells

    Herein, a new water soluble Ca2+ fluorescence chemosensor based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics has been developed, combining the AIE effect of tetraphenylethylene (TPE) and the complexation capability of bidentate pyridine carboxylate. The bidentate pyridine carboxylate group provides the chemosensor with good water-solubility which is important for detection in biological systems. This chemosensor L showed high selectivity for Ca2+ by a turn-on response in almost pure aqueous solution with a detection limit of 51.2 nM. L can be used as a recyclable Ca2+ fluorescent chemosensor in the presence of EDTA. Moreover, the chemosensor L was successfully applied to imaging detection and real-time monitoring of Ca2+ in living cells with low toxicity and good membrane permeability.

  • Color tuning donor–acceptor-type azobenzene dyes by controlling the molecular geometry of the donor moiety

    Two series of donor–acceptor (D–A)-type azobenzene dyes with a tertiary amine as the donor were synthesized, and their photophysical and thermal properties were investigated. Although tertiary amines with the same Hammett constant were used, the properties of the molecules varied considerably depending on the molecular geometry of the tertiary amine. We found that the electron-donating properties could be controlled by the molecular geometry of the donor, as the geometry strongly affected the orientation of the n orbital of the donor relative to the p orbitals of the π-conjugated system of the phenyl ring. When the n orbital was fixed parallel to the p orbitals, the donor exhibited strong electron-donating properties. These results suggest that the molecular geometry should be considered in addition to the primary molecular structure for the design of highly functional materials.

    Three benzothiazole-based two-photon absorption (2PA) chromophores (B1-3) were synthesized and the optical properties were investigated. The results illustrated the largest fluorescence quantum yield and effective 2PA cross-sections reached to 0.81 for compound B1 and 1013 GM for compound B3 in tetrahydrofuran solutions, respectively. Furthermore, the water-soluble fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) possessing an embedded structure were prepared from the three compounds and Pluronic F127, which were successfully applied on two-photon nuclear envelope imaging.

  • Energy transfer and tunable photoluminescence of LaBWO6:Tb3+,Eu3+ phosphors for near-UV white LEDs

    Tb3+ and Eu3+ ion co-doped LaBWO6 phosphors with tunable color emissions were synthesized by a conventional high-temperature solid-state reaction technique and were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, emission and excitation spectra, and decay lifetimes. Under 380 nm near-ultraviolet excitation, the characteristic visible emissions, which originate from the f–f transitions of Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions, were observed in the emission spectra. By increasing of the Eu3+/Tb3+ concentration ratio, the LaBWO6:Tb3+,Eu3+ phosphors were capable of generating color tunability from green to yellow, then to red. The energy transfer process between Tb3+ and Eu3+ was demonstrated to be a resonant type via a dipole–dipole mechanism, and the critical distance calculated by the concentration quenching method was determined to be 11.1 Å. Moreover, the temperature-dependent emission spectra showed that the as-prepared phosphors possessed good thermal stability with an activation energy of 0.263 eV. These LaBWO6:Tb3+,Eu3+ phosphors with tunable emissions may have potential applications in near-ultraviolet-pumped white light-emitting diodes.

  • Sol-gel derived barium orthovanadate phosphors for white light-emitting diodes

    The Ba3(VO4)2 self-luminescent materials were synthesized by a sol-gel method. The structural and morphological properties of the prepared materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern and scanning electron microscope images. The XRD pattern showed that the samples crystallized in the rhombohedral phase with a space group of R<img height="13" border="0" style="vertical-align:bottom" width="11" alt="View the MathML source" title="View the MathML source" src="http://origin-ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S0143720817320089-si1.gif">3¯ m (166). The XRD pattern is consistent with the Joint Committee on Powder Diffraction Standards card values without any other impurity peaks. The self-luminescence properties of the samples were investigated by measuring the photoluminescence (PL) excitation and emission spectra by using a spectrofluorometer. The PL spectra revealed that the materials can give visible bluish-green emission under ultraviolet irradiation. The materials were further employed in making near-ultraviolet excitable white light-emitting diodes. The Ba3(VO4)2 phosphor along with a red emitting phosphor were mixed in silicone epoxy and applied to the near-ultraviolet light-emitting diode to obtain a bright white-light emission with a color rendering index value of 80 and correlated color temperature of 4075 K.

  • A 3D supramolecular network as highly selective and sensitive luminescent sensor for PO43− and Cu2+ ions in aqueous media

    A 2D coordination polymer, {[Zn(btca)(py)2]}n (1), (H2btca = benzotriazole-5-carboxylic acid, py = pyridine), has been prepared with high yield by the hydrothermal reaction of H2btca and Zn(NO3)2·6H2O in the presence of py, which has been further characterized by kinds of methods combining elemental analysis, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, infrared (IR) spectrum, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. In 1, each Zn2+ adopts a five-coordinated pentagonal bipyramid geometry with one O atom from one carboxylate group of btca2− ligand and four N atoms from two btca2− ligands and two py molecules. Adjacent Zn2+ are connected by btca2− ligands to generate a 2D layer with the ‘fes’-type topology, which could further form a 3D supramolecular network through hydrogen bonds interactions. Furthermore, the luminescent results reveal that the detection limit of 1 as a luminescent sensor to probe Cu2+ and PO43− could reach 3 and 45 ppm, respectively, suggesting that 1 can sensitively and selectively detect Cu2+ and PO43− in aqueous solution.

  • A comparative study on different RE-doped (RE=Pr, Nd, Sm) SrCuSi4O10 blue pigments with high near-infrared reflectance

    Ecological inorganic blue pigments Sr1-xRExCuSi4O10+δ (RE = Pr, Nd, Sm, x ranges from 0 to 0.5) with high near-infrared reflectance were synthesized via sol-gel method. The pigments were characterized with scanning electron microscopy, UV-vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and the Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage 1976 L*a*b* colorimetric method. After annealed at 900 °C, the SrCuSi4O10 pigment samples exhibited near-infrared solar reflectance of 62.64% and relative intense blue color. The near-infrared reflectance spectra of different rare earth ions doped SrCuSi4O10 pigments presented various fluctuations due to the configurational electric dipole transitions. The incorporation of rare earth ions can promote the near-infrared reflectance and solar reflectance of SrCuSi4O10 pigments. When the adding amount of Pr, Nd and Sm, was 20%, 40% and 10%, the near-infrared solar reflectance of SrCuSi4O10 pigments reached the optimal value of 72.00%, 68.54%, 68.67%, respectively, which are expected to be promising candidates as environmentally benign cool blue pigments.

    The one- and two-dimensional 15N NMR spectra of (E)- and (Z)-2-(2-(2-hydroxy-4-nitrophenyl)hydrazono)-1-phenylbutane-1,3-diones (1) were measured and analysed and 15N chemical shifts and 1J (15N, 1H) coupling constants were used for characterization of these two compounds from the viewpoint of azo-hydrazo tautomerism. Both compounds exist completely in appropriate hydrazo forms in dimethyl sulfoxide.Advantages of 15N NMR spectroscopy application in determination of acidic proton positions and azo-hydrazo content determination are discussed. We would like to propose the application of 15N NMR data measured at the natural abundance level of 15N as the “first glance” and strongest evidence method for the existence of hydrazo form in azo dyes and for differentiation of E- and Z-isomers around C=Nβ double bond.

  • Synthesis and characterization of highly soluble phenanthro[1,10,9,8-c,d,e,f,g]carbazole-based copolymer: Effects of thermal treatment on crystalline order and charge carrier mobility

    In this study, a novel donor-acceptor type semiconducting polymer was designed and synthesized based on phenanthro[1,10,9,8-c,d,e,f,g]carbazole backbone. The resulting polymer, poly[ 4-(5-(6-(2-decyltetradecyl)-6H-phenanthro[1,10,9,8-c,d,e,f,g]carbazol-4-yl)thiophen-2-yl)-5,6-bis(octyloxy)-7-(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole] (PPTBTT), exhibited high solubility in various solvents which enables facile fabrication of semiconducting devices such as thin-film transistors, and also opens up possibilities for large scale solution processing. Absorption spectra of PPTBTT showed large bathochromic shift when the polymer was prepared as a thin-film, which can be explained by the high solubility and molecular packing of the synthesized polymer. X-ray diffraction measurements showed that the crystalline structure of PPTBTT polymer film is largely influenced by the thermal treatment temperature. Together with the atomic force microscopy data, it was found that the optimal thermal treatment temperature of PPTBTT film is 170 °C. The charge transfer characteristics were confirmed by fabricating PPTBTT thin-film transistor. In accordance with the polycrystalline structure, PPTBTT film transistor showed the highest mobility of 0.0092 cm2 V−1 s−1 and on/off ratio of 104 when the device was annealed at 170 °C.

    In the present work, a dual mode sensor, which was obtained by integrating B, N, S co-doped carbon dots and Fe3+ (BNS-CDs@Fe3+), was developed for sensing ascorbic acid (AA). The fluorescent signal of BNS-CDs@Fe3+ sensor could be enhanced by AA, and a good linear relationship was obtained in the range of 0.1–600 μM with a detection limit down to 0.05 μM. More fascinatingly, the color of the sensor solution gradually changed from blue to red with the increasing concentrations of AA, which allowed establishing a simple colorimetric assay for AA detection in the linear range of 1–110 μM with a detection limit of 0.3 μM. Notably, a paper sensor for the determination of AA was developed with a lowest visual concentration of 1 μM, providing a novel and convenient platform for AA detection. More importantly, cell imaging experiments showed that this sensor can be applied for AA detection in HeLa cell, suggesting this sensing system holds great potential in biosensing and bioimaging.

  • Improvement of optical properties and redox stability of poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene)

    In order to improve the optical properties and redox stability of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) without changing its electrochemical and electrochromic behaviour, it was supported with alkyl-substituted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) cage. The corresponding copolymers were obtained electrochemically via potentiostatic or potentiodynamic methods and compared to the parent homopolymers. Electrochemical polymerization of EDOT and POSS containing EDOT called EDOT-POSS in various monomer feed ratios was performed in an electrolyte solution of 0.1 M TBAPF6 dissolved in a mixture of dichloromethane and acetonitrile (1/3: v/v). Just as PEDOT, the copolymers represented the similar band gap (1.61 eV), redox and electrochromic behaviors. On the other hand, when compared to the parent PEDOT, the presence of POSS cages in the copolymer backbone improved the redox stability and optical properties of PEDOT such as higher percent transmittance change (65% at 621 nm), higher transparency at oxidized state, lower switching time (∼1.0 s) and higher coloration efficiency (463 cm2/C for 95% switching) as well as higher electrochemical stability (86% of its electroactivity retains after 1750 cycles under ambient conditions).

    This work reports on the successful chemical linkage of folic acid (FA) to Zn mono carboxyphenoxy phthalocyanine (1) and Zn mono carboxyphenoxy tri–(tert–butyl) phthalocyanines (2). The amide bond linkage of FA to Pc as achieved for the first time through the FA-NH2 and Pc-COOH as confirmed using FTIR, MS, elemental analysis and NMR. The linked conjugates were found to be water soluble compared to the physical mixtures of FA and Pc, which allowed for studies of singlet oxygen in water. The Pc-FA linked conjugates (1-FA and 2-FA) were found to be singlet oxygen generators with the following singlet oxygen quantum yields: 1-FA = 0.61 and 2-FA = 0.47 in DMSO and 1-FA = 0.17 and 2-FA = 0.12 in water.

  • Novel electron acceptor based on spiro[fluorine-9,9′-xanthene] for exciplex thermally activated delayed fluorescence

    Two cyano-substituted spiro[fluorine-9,9′-xanthene] (SFX) derivatives, 2-carbonitrile-spiro[fluorene-9,9′-xanthene] (CNSFX) and 2,7-dicarbonitrile-spiro[fluorene-9,9′-xanthene] (DCNSFX) were conveniently prepared as electron acceptors to combine with tris(4-carbazoyl-9-ylphenyl)amine (TCTA) as electron donor to form exciplex emitters, respectively. Favorable exciplex-TADF was successfully achieved with photoluminescence quantum yield of 31% and electroluminescence efficiency of 8.2 cd A−1 in TCTA:DCNSFX, which possesses increases of 1.1 and 3.3 times than those (15% and 1.9 cd A−1) of TCTA:CNSFX, respectively. The relatively favorable performance of TCTA:DCNSFX is related to the stronger electron-accepting ability through dicyano-substitution and larger driving force in the exciplex emission. These appealing results reveal that the dicyano-substituted SFX derivative opens interesting perspectives for developing favorable exciplex-TADF organic light-emitting diodes in the future.

  • Diamine-cored tetrastilbene compounds as solution-processable hole transport materials for stable organic light emitting diodes

    A series of diamine-cored tetrastilbene (DTS) derivatives bearing various aliphatic and aromatic substituents was designed and synthesized for use as solution-processed hole transport layers (HTLs) in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The chemical structures of the DTS derivatives were strategically designed to increase solubility in organic solvents as well as to avoid self-crystallization, and thus ensure a stable morphology under Joule heating while maintaining efficient hole transport capabilities. The five DTS derivatives, composed of different conjugation structures, yielded reasonably good hole transport behavior with a marginal charge carrier mobility of ∼10−5 cm2V−1s−1, which is similar to that of vacuum-deposited N,N′-bis(1-naphthyl)-N,N′-diphenyl-1,1′-biphenyl-4,4′-diamine (NPB). Due to the high glass transition temperatures of the DTS derivatives, this satisfactory charge transport behavior and smooth surface morphology were conserved up to 180 °C. Green OLEDs were prepared using tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3):C545T as the emission layer, and the OLED performances of the solution-processed DTS HTLs and the vacuum-deposited NPB HTL were compared. A high luminance efficiency of 11.5 cd A−1 was obtained for one solution-processed DTS HTL, which exceeds that of the NPB HTL (10.01 cd A−1). Furthermore, the DTS HTLs enabled a stable OLED operation, with double the accelerated half-life of the NPB-based device.

    In this work, the crystalline structure of single crystals grown by vacuum sublimation of unsubstituted palladium phthalocyanines (PdPc), its tetrafluorinated (PdPcF4) and hexadecafluorinated (PdPcF16) derivatives have been investigated using X-ray diffraction measurements. Two crystalline phases have been identified for PdPc; the molecules in both phases crystallize in stacks with herringbone arrangement in the monoclinic space groups (C2/c for α-PdPc; P21/n for γ-PdPc). Both PdPcF4 and PdPcF16 crystallize in the triclinic P-1 space group, forming stacks of molecules in columnar arrangement with molecules in adjacent columns are aligned parallel to one another. X-ray diffraction measurements have also been used to elucidate the structural features and molecular orientation of thin films of PdPc, PdPcF4 and PdPcF16, grown by organic molecular beam deposition at different substrate temperatures. The effect of fluorosubstitution on UV-visible optical absorption and vibrational spectra of palladium phthalocyanine derivatives is also discussed.
