个人简介

Kevin Smith is the LSU Foundation James C. Bolton Distinguished Professor at Louisiana State University (LSU). He received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Liverpool, England, in 1964 and 1967, respectively. After spending 2 years as a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University working with Nobel Laureate Robert B. Woodward (on a Fulbright Award), he returned to the University of Liverpool as a chemistry lecturer. After 8 years serving on the faculty in the University of Liverpool (during which time he gained tenure, won the Corday-Morgan Medal and Prize of the British Chemical Society, and was awarded the D.Sc. degree), Smith moved across the Atlantic in 1977 and took up a full professor position in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Davis. In California he also served as Chemistry Department Chairman (1990-1994), Associate Vice Chancellor for Research (1996), and as the campus-wide Vice Chancellor for Research (1997-2001). In 2001 he moved to Louisiana State University, taking up positions as LSU Foundation Distinguished Professor, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, and Dean of the Graduate School. In 2005 he discontinued his administrative positions. Smith Chaired the Gordon Research Conference on the Chemistry and Biology of Tetrapyrroles in 1984, was a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) fellow in 1992, was co-organizer of the Third International Conference on Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines (ICPP-3) in New Orleans in 2004, and was awarded the Robert Burns Woodward Career Award in Porphyrin Chemistry in 2006 at ICPP-4 in Rome, Italy. Smith is the 2009 winner of the American Chemical Society’s Alfred Bader Award for Bioorganic and Bioinorganic Chemistry. Smith has been an Associate Editor of the Journal of Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines since 1998 and was co-editor of the landmark 20 volume series “The Porphyrin Handbook”. This Handbook won the Professional and Scholarly Division Award of the Association of American Publishers for the best Chemistry “book” of 1999. Smith has presented a very large number of invited talks at research institutions in Europe, North America, South America, Asia and Australasia. He has given numerous plenary lectures at national meetings of chemical societies in the USA, UK, Japan, China, Hong Kong (pre-UK/China transfer), Malaysia, France, Italy, Sweden, Germany and Argentina, and has given keynote addresses and major invited presentations at Gordon Research Conferences and national and international meetings of disciplinary groups (IUPAC, UK Tetrapyrrole Group, Society for Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines, Chemical Society of London, Royal Society (London), American Chemical Society, The Electrochemical Society, SPIE, Photodynamic Therapy Association, etc.). His research interests are in the organic and biological chemistry areas: Synthesis, biosynthesis, chemistry, biochemistry, and spectroscopy of porphyrins, hemes, chlorophylls, vitamin B12, other tetrapyrrole pigments, and their metal complexes. Smith’s research has particularly emphasized the use of organic synthesis for production of photosensitizers for the Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) treatment of cancers. He has authored more than 680 publications, holds 8 patents associated with PDT, and his research is currently funded by the US National Institutes of Health (National Cancer Institute).

研究领域

Our group is one of the world’s leading synthetic porphyrin groups. We are interested in the development of new methodology for the total synthesis of complex unsymmetrical porphyrin systems. The novel synthetic products are then used to facilitate fundamental developments and breakthroughs in the areas of hemoprotein structure/function relationships, assembly and characterization of oligomeric porphyrin species of the type found in photosynthetic reaction-center and antenna systems and in molecular electronics, biosynthesis of heme and of the isocyclic ring found in chlorophyll-a and bacteriochlorophylls, and the use of tetrapyrroles in the photodynamic therapy for cancer treatment. In addition, we have several ongoing projects in which we are investigating the fundamental heterocyclic organic chemistry of aromatic porphyrin and chlorin chromophores and on substituent modification in tetrapyrroles. Of particular interest are the effects upon the chemistry and spectroscopy of porphyrin systems which can be experienced by the introduction of “designer non-planarity”; many tetrapyrrole chromophores in nature are subject to non-planar distortions (for example, due to interactions with proteins), and we have been mimicking these distortions through gradual introduction of non-planarity by building new porphyrins in which steric congestion causes non-planarity.
