Blood Red: Political Use of Transfer-Print Ware in Argentina (1810–1860)

Abstract

The authors analyze the connection between the local preference for a particular color of transfer-print ceramics and the political group in power in postrevolutionary Argentina during three periods ranging from 1810 to the 1860s. The first period begins with the establishment of the first national government. The following two periods correspond to the governments of Juan Manuel de Rosas and Justo José de Urquiza. There is a crossover between written sources and the archaeological record of the city of Buenos Aires, particularly in the light of recent findings at Juan Manuel de Rosas’s residence and his seat of government. Searches at that site led to the recovery of important ceramics decorated with the emblems of his political faction.

Resumen

Los autores analizan la asociación entre la preferencia local por determinado color de vajilla transfer y el poder político de turno en la Argentina posrevolucionaria. Se establecen tres periodos que van del año 1810 a la década de 1860 y que definen cambios en la preferencia del color de la vajilla de loza doméstica en función de variaciones en la política: una primera etapa tras la creación del primer gobierno nacional, y otras dos asociadas a los gobiernos sucesivos de Juan Manuel de Rosas y Justo José de Urquiza. Se hace un cruce entre las fuentes escritas y el registro arqueológico de la ciudad de Buenos Aires, y especialmente los recientes hallazgos en el predio que fuera residencia y sede de gobierno de Juan Manuel de Rosas, donde se recuperó un conjunto significativo de vajilla con los emblemas de su facción política.

Résumé

Les auteurs analysent la connexion entre la préférence locale pour une couleur particulière de céramiques avec impression par transfert et le groupe politique au pouvoir dans l'Argentine post-révolutionnaire durant trois périodes allant de 1810 aux années 1860. La première période commence par la mise en place du premier gouvernement national. Les deux périodes suivantes correspondent aux gouvernements de Juan Manuel de Rosas et de Justo José de Urquiza. Il existe un chevauchement entre les sources écrites et les archives archéologiques de la ville de Buenos Aires, notamment au regard des découvertes récentes dans la résidence de Juan Manuel de Rosa et au siège de son gouvernement. Les fouilles sur ce site ont conduit à la découverte de céramiques importantes dont les décorations sont les emblèmes de sa faction politique.

  1. Gericault had painted General José de San Martín, the man who had managed to expel the Spanish from the region, thus making the country independent.

  2. An examination of the database of the “Transferware Collectors Club” and encyclopedias on earthenware manufactures produced no such trademark.

  3. Transfer-printed fragments were also found in blue (approximately 10%) and in smaller proportion in purple, black, and brown.

  4. The known pieces bear the names of the following: Luis P.
