In the April 15, 2022 issue of One Earth, Borodin, Xu, and colleagues introduce a hybrid electrolyte with a supporting salt for rechargeable Zn metal batteries, which helps construct a unique solid electrolyte interphase at the Zn anode through the reaction between additive cations and dissolved CO2 in the electrolyte. The interphase boosts the Zn anode reversibility and cyclability remarkably by taming side reactions and dendrite formation, leading to an extended Zn anode lifespan of over 3,500 h at 0.5 mA cm−2 and 0.5 mAh cm−2.
