Abstract

The present study, the protective effect of Olea europaea L. leaf extract containing high oleuropein on oxidative damage in ischemic and non-ischemic parts of rat liver was investigated. The Spraque-dawley male rats were separated into five groups. The physiological water was given to Group I and Group II. Group III, IV, and V animals received orally 150, 200 and 400 mg kg–1/day olive leaf extract for 15 days, respectively. Then, except for Group I rats, partial (2/3) liver Ischemia (45 min)/Reperfusion (60 min) (I/R) was applied in the other groups. In addition to histopathological and cytological examination, serum Alanine transaminase (ALT) and Aspartate transaminase (AST) levels in liver tissues as well as activities of the Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT) and Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzymes were investigated. As a result of the statistical evaluations of all parameters, the oxidative damage in ischemic and non-ischemic parts of the liver was same in all experimental groups. 200 mg kg–1/day Olea europaea L. leaf extract was found to have more protective effect against I/R induced oxidative damage when compared to other doses.
