First Record of Branchiomma luctuosum (Grube, 1870) (Annelida: Polychaeta: Sabellidae) in Morocco

Abstract

The fanworm Branchiomma luctuosum (Grube, 1870) is here reported from the Marina of Saidia, representing the first record of this alien species from Morocco and for the entire Mediterranean coast of Africa. Recreational boating, and in general maritime transport, constitutes the most possible vector of introduction. As this species can show invasive traits and easily propagate in new habitats, a monitoring of its distribution along the Moroccan, and in general African, coastline is highly recommended.
