Abstract

Densities of binary mixtures of butyronitrile with dimethylsulfoxide and diethylsulfoxide are measured throughout the range of concentrations and in the temperature range of 298.15–323.15 K at ambient pressure. Volumetric parameters, the parameters of the Redlich–Kister equation, and the standard deviations of the excess molar volumes are calculated. Deviation of the behavior of these solutions from ideal is explained by the presence of competing homo- and hetero-molecular interactions, and by the effect the length of the hydrocarbon chain of sulfoxides has on the values of volumetric parameters.
