Abstract

This work deals with a green route to fabricate a biocompatible hybrid film composed of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and ethyl cellulose (EC). The hybrid film (AgNP/EC), with a thickness of 30 μm, was obtained by synthesizing in situ AgNPs in EC. EC was used as a reducing agent of silver ions and stabilizing agent of AgNPs. The structural, optical, mechanical, and dielectric properties of the AgNP/EC film were characterized; the results were compared to a reference EC film. From transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, AgNPs of quasi-spherical morphology (average size ~ 1.94 nm) embedded in the EC matrix of the hybrid film were identified. The UV–visible absorbance spectrum of the AgNP/EC film showed three peaks associated with the presence of AgNPs in the EC matrix. Through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), a band at 1588 cm−1 was assigned to the interaction between carboxyl groups of EC and AgNPs. Compared to the EC film, the mechanical and dielectric dynamic analyses evidenced for the AgNP/EC film an increment of the glass transition temperature and storage elastic modulus. But the dielectric permittivity of AgNP/EC film decreases slightly with respect to EC film. Due to its properties the AgNP/EC film can be considered as an important material with potential applications for the design of sensors and actuators in biological systems.
