A shared target for stroke subtypes

One key factor when treating stroke — the second leading cause of death in the world — is to minimize the time between an event and treatment administration. Ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke require different therapies, and taking time to diagnose the subtype of stroke often leads to delays in treatment administration and, subsequently, to reduced efficacy. Now, Fang et al. have designed a synthetic peptide that targets the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) pathway, which is involved in the pathology of both types of stroke. This small peptide protected neurons against the injuries from ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke in mice and reduced the infarct volume in nonhuman primates.
