Quaternary Fission as a Virtual Process

  • Published:
Bulletin of the Russian Academy of Sciences: Physics Aims and scope

Abstract

A virtual mechanism used for describing low-energy ternary fission is generalized to spontaneous and induced quaternary fission. A formula is obtained for the width of quaternary fission as a virtual process. The height and penetrability of the Coulomb barrier are estimated for the spontaneous fission of 248Cm and 252Cf nuclei and the thermal neutron induced fission of 233U and 235U nuclei with the emission of pairs of α particles.
