Comparing Energy-Based Criterion with Strain-Based Criterion for Predicting Brittle Fracture in V-Shaped Notches under Mixed-Mode I/II Loading Conditions

Abstract

In this study, the ability of two criteria, the maximum tangential strain energy density criterion and the maximum tangential strain criterion for sharp V-shaped notches, were evaluated. These two criteria in the crack can be employed within the entire range of the mixed-mode loading from pure mode I to pure mode II and provide acceptable results. However, these criteria have been less examined for the notch. The outcomes of these criteria for V-shaped notches were then compared with each other and with experimental results. The results of both criteria for different notch vertex angles within a wide range of mixed-mode I/II loading showed good convergence with experimental results.
