Abstract

We take a look back at the conferences we attended in 2018. As every year, we try to cover a mix of small and large, academic and industry conferences, to get the pulse of our patent information industry, but also to make sure that developments in computer-based information processing are on our radar. The buzz around anything “AI” that we observed last year continues strongly. We report here on three conferences: the European Conference on Information Retrieval, Patent Information User Group conference, and the European Patent Office Patent Information Conference.

The European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR) March 2018 (ML)

The ECIR is the primary academic venue for information retrieval in Europe. Additionally to the main, academic, programme, it also organizes an Industry Day, where members of the industry present their challenges and successes, in relation to search technology, covering text, but also data in general.

In that sense, the keynote of the 2018 edition of the ECIR Industry Day was given by Radim Řehůřekis, creator of the Gensim [1] Python library for topic modelling and information retrieval. He

The annual conference of the Patent Information User Group (PIUG) May 2018 (ML)

Many of the readers of this Journal are more familiar with the PIUG Annual Conference than me, as this was the first time I had the pleasure to attend this event. It was also a special occasion for all attendees, as it was the 30th anniversary of the PIUG.

As for the 25th and the 20th anniversaries, the PIUG Annual Conference returned to Virginia, USA, in close proximity to the USPTO offices.

The keynote of the first day was also provided by Joseph Matal, formerly performing the roles of Under

The European Patent Office Patent Information Conference, Brussels, Belgium, November 2018 (JL)

This year there were several anniversaries to be celebrated – 40 years of INPADOC, 20 years of espacenet, and 10 years of (the concept for) the EPO's federated register – all vitally important for patent information users and the wider patent information industry and supply chain. And 2018 is also a year 1 - the first year of the new Presidency of the EPO for António Campinos. We eagerly awaited his speech, to find out about his commitment to patent information. We were not disappointed –
