Abstract
The importance of the Red Data Book of Soils compilation is substantiated. The idea is based on some fundamental principles interpreted for the regional level: phenomenological, of the equivalence of components, the priority of virgin soil objects, representativeness, rarity of soil cover components, regional, zonal, azonal, catenary, and natural-historical. The main soil objects, which correspond to the zonal standards, i.e. rare, unique and endangered soils of high priority to be included in these environmental documents, have been identified by the example of the soil cover of Kirov oblast. It is proposed to assign podzolic, soddy-podzolic, and gray soils on mantle loams widely spread in the region to the zonal standards of the middle and southern taiga and mixed forests. Polygenic soils with a complicated humus profile, which includes the second relic residual and buried humus horizons are rare soils, which should be included in the regional Red Data Soil Book. A specific list of priority objects for the future regional Red Data Soil Book is presented, and the main areas of their occurrence are specified. In addition to soil reserves, it is proposed to distinguish the category of pedogenic natural monuments in places accessible for a direct observation of scientifically valuable soil objects, outcropping in river valley banks. These materials may be used to develop a local network of protected areas by including in it a new category of natural heritage: soil. These materials are of interest for environmental services of Kirov oblast and for other members of the Russian Federation.
