Abstract

Corrosion inhibition of synthesized eugenol acetate (EA), eugenol benzoate (EB), 3-allylanisol (AA) and dihydroeugenol (DHE), and commercially available eugenol (E), guaiacol (G) and safrole (S) on mild steel metal specimens investigated in 0.10 mol dm–3 NaCl solutions with the inhibitor concentrations of 100 and 200 ppm using mass loss measurements and electrochemical methods indicate that all the above compounds show corrosion inhibitory properties in the decreasing order of EB > EA > E > DHE > G > S > AA. The above model compounds function as mixed-type inhibitors, and the effectiveness of the functional groups of eugenol on the inhibition of mild steel corrosion in salty medium can be ordered as, phenyl group, –OH group, –OCH3 group and allyl group in decreasing order of efficiency.
