A comparison of Korean and Indonesian secondary school students’ career values

Abstract

The exploration of career values can motivate and inspire young people, and help them achieve career success. The current study assesses the effect of sociocultural background on adolescents' career value among 951 Indonesian and 1,242 Korean secondary school students. Latent class analysis results suggest that participants can be grouped into five classes: personal-stability oriented, ability utilization, social-status oriented, social-relation oriented, and multi-valued leadership. Furthermore, the result of a three-way ANOVA indicated significant interactions for country, gender, and educational level on all career values for every class. The findings are discussed in the sociocultural contexts of Indonesia and Korea.

Résumé

Une comparaison des valeurs de carriers des élèves coréen·ne·s et indonésien·ne·s du secondaire. L'exploration des valeurs et des désirs professionnels peut motiver et inspirer les jeunes, et les aider à réussir leur carrière. L'étude actuelle évalue l'effet du milieu socioculturel sur les carrières souhaitées par les adolescent·e·s parmi 951 élèves indonésien·ne·s et 1 242 élèves coréen·ne·s du secondaire. Les résultats de l'analyse en classes latentes suggèrent que les participant·e·s peuvent être regroupé·e·s en cinq classes: orientation vers la stabilité personnelle, utilisation des capacités, orientation vers le statut social, orientation vers les relations sociales et leadership à valeurs multiples. Les résultats d'une ANOVA à trois facteurs ont indiqué des interactions significatives pour le pays, le genre et le niveau d'éducation sur toutes les valeurs de carrière pour chaque classe. Les résultats sont examinés dans les contextes socioculturels de l'Indonésie et de la Corée.

Zusammenfassung

EIN VERGLEICH DER BERUFSWERTE KOREANISCHER UND INDONESISCHER SCHÜLER DER SEKUNDARSTUFE. Die Erforschung von Berufswerten und -wünschen kann junge Menschen motivieren und inspirieren und ihnen helfen, beruflichen Erfolg zu erreichen. In der aktuellen Studie wird der Einfluss des soziokulturellen Hintergrunds auf die Berufswünsche von Jugendlichen unter 951 indonesischen und 1.242 koreanischen Sekundarschülern untersucht. Die Ergebnisse der latenten Klassenanalyse deuten darauf hin, dass die Teilnehmer in fünf Klassen eingeteilt werden können: persönlichkeitsstabilitätsorientiert, fähigkeitsverwertungsorientiert, sozialstatusorientiert, sozialbeziehungsorientiert und mehrwertorientierte Führung. Die Ergebnisse einer dreifachen ANOVA zeigten signifikante Interaktionen für Land, Geschlecht und Bildungsniveau auf alle Karrierewerte für jede Klasse. Die Ergebnisse werden in den soziokulturellen Kontexten Indonesiens und Koreas diskutiert.

UNA COMPARACIÓN DE LOS VALORES DE CARRERA DE LOS ESTUDIANTES DE EDUCACIÓN SECUNDARIA DE COREA E INDONESIA. La exploración de los valores y deseos profesionales puede motivar e inspirar a los jóvenes y ayudarlos a alcanzar el éxito profesional. El presente estudio evalúa el efecto de los antecedentes socioculturales en las carreras deseadas por los adolescentes entre 951 estudiantes de secundaria indonesios y 1.242 coreanos. Los resultados del análisis de clases latentes sugieren que los participantes pueden agruparse en cinco clases: Orientado a la estabilidad personal, utilización de habilidades, orientado al estatus social, orientado a las relaciones sociales y liderazgo de distintos valores. Los resultados de un ANOVA de tres factores indicaron interacciones significativas para el país, el género y el nivel educativo en todos los valores de carrerea para cada clase identificada. Se realiza la discusión de los resultados dentro de los contextos socioculturales de Indonesia y Corea.
