Highlights

  • Buckingham’s π-theorem is applied to model electrospinning and electrospraying to find the fiber or particle diameter.

  • The proposed dimensionless model elucidates how the fiber or jet diameter depends on the processes parameter values.

  • The α and β values capture fractal phenomena that appear in the process such as solvent evaporation and air permeability.

  • The obtained expressions shed new light for enhancing the electrospinning/electrospraying processes applicability.

Abstract

In this article, Buckingham’s π-theorem is applied to model electrospinning and electrospraying to find the fiber or particle diameter as a function of Taylor’s cone height, solution’s electrical conductivity, viscosity, surface tension, operating flow rate, and electric field intensity. The derived expressions elucidate how the fiber or particles diameter varies as a function of the process parameters and liquid properties.
