A New Look at the Problem of Wear on Wheel Rolling

Abstract

The article takes a new look at the reasons for wheel wear in a wheelset. The basic provisions of theoretical mechanics are used to substantiate the change in linear velocities of wheels in the wheelset at rail joints, which leads to lateral wheel drift and additional strain on the wheel crest, one of the main causes of different types of wear phenomena. At the same time, the amount of wear increases by an average of 23%. In addition, it has been found that when wheeled pair moves at joints, it leads to a vibrational process that also negatively impacts the wear intensity. The proposed theoretical dependences make it possible to quantify the force pressing the wheel crest to the rail to subsequently assess and predict its wear magnitude, which has practical significance at the operating and repair stage of rolling stock.
