Abstract

The mechanism of fracture of the plasma thermal barrier coatings made of mixtures of zirconia and yttria (5.5 and 7%) powders in the form of solid and hollow spherical particles is studied by sclerometry. The fracture of the coatings is found to occur in the upper layers according to a cohesive mechanism. The coating formed from a powder mixture of the composition ZrO2 + 7% Y2O3 consisting of solid spherical particles has the optimum set of properties.
