Russian Metallurgy (Metally) Aims and scope

Abstract

RUSAL is developing an effective alternative technology for the production of alumina from the non-bauxite raw materials from the deposits in Western Siberia to decrease the cost of transporting bauxite to alumina plants and, then, alumina to aluminum plants. In the production of metallurgical alumina using the aluminum chloride technology, up to 3 t Si-stoff (with up to 90% SiO2) per 1 ton product is formed from kaolins. The possibility of recycling Si-stoff by processing it into products, such as cement clinker, hydraulic cement additives, mineral fillers for asphalt concrete mixes, cheap and effective sorbents for oil spills, liquid glass, silicate building materials and ceramics, and acid-resistant linings and silica gels, is estimated. Positive results for the application of Si-stoff in cements are obtained. A technology has been developed for the production of liquid glass from Si-stoff with the possibility of its subsequent use in the production of various types of silica gels, e.g., absorbers or special fillers for rubber products.
