Abstract

Mineral fillers used in asphalt concrete mixtures have significant impacts on their performance. In this study, bagasse ash, a waste material of the sugar refining industry is utilized as a filler material in asphalt concrete for performance evaluation of asphalt concrete. It is used in varying percentages with partial and full replacement of stone dust which is conventionally used as filler. A comparative study between the conventional filler stone dust and the modified filler using bagasse ash is presented. Optimum binder content is determined using Marshall mix design method in accordance with MS-2 Asphalt Institute mix design method. Mixtures prepared exhibit good results and conform to the general specifications. The performance testing includes dynamic modulus test and wheel tracking test. The rut depth of modified sample such as with bagasse ash reduced as compared to conventional samples mostly at 100% replacement of filler. The dynamic stiffness is high at higher filler contents, and with 100% replacement. The results show that bagasse ash can be used as a filler material in partial or full replacement of the conventional stone dust filler.
