Abstract:
As the title of this essay suggests, the focus of this piece is the multiple ways in which Everett brings together his talents as a novelist and painter to create a compelling novel bathed in visual art and shrouded in secrets. Subjects discussed include the carefully designed structure of the narrative, the text's dependence on the reader's (and characters') seeing and feeling, and a conclusion that rests on the revelation of an abstract painting the meaning of which can be variously understood by a discerning reader.
