Journal of the Southwest

Agnese Haury, a longtime and great friend of the Southwest Center and a dedicated and innovative philanthropist, died on March 20, 2014, in Tucson, Arizona, at the age of 90. This issue of the journal is dedicated to Agnese and her memory and her long history of interest in the Southwest Center.

Two short and charming essays by Gary Nabhan and David Yetman celebrate her support and involvement. But Journal of the Southwest is true to Agnese and her inimitable style by placing the substance of the journal—"Accidental Anthropologists: Thomas Childs Jr. and His Daughter Fillman Bell"—at the forefront. Agnese always sought to promote the substance, while keeping her participation discreet and hidden.

She would be delighted to see "Accidental Anthropologists" in print in the journal—exactly the kind of work she loved—and dismayed and embarrassed to have her history of philanthropy discussed at all. We have a slightly uncomfortable balance, but one faithful both to Agnese's legacy and to the extraordinary contribution of Bill Broyles and Rein Vanderpot. Agnese would have loved this issue of JSW!
