Abstract

Abstract:

William Sturkey’s introduction to the Southern Cultures special issue “Inside/Outside” opens with an anecdote about the contested histories and memories of slavery in North Carolina to push us to reconsider how the historical processes of southern studies has alienated some to provide comfort to others. Sturkey urges us to look beyond outdated familial myths to include the voices of all southerners to welcome more diverse voices into the field of southern studies.
