Information on the key stages in the origination and operation of commercial uranium-graphite and heavy-water reactors is presented. The problems solved for purposes of safety enhancement and lifetime extension of dual-purpose reactors are described and the basic approaches to decommissioning are presented. Information on the specifics of heavy-water commercial reactors is represented.
