Abstract

In house CFD code, FVHT has been used to solve the dimensionless form of the governing equations of heat transfer utilizing a hybrid TDMA method within a high-order finite volume approach. Enclosures with different aspect ratios (0.25 to 8) have been studied with different heat generation rates (6 to 14) in dimensionless form. The enclosures were in natural convection heat transfer mode filled with water (Pr = 6.2) having Rayleigh number from 103 to 106. Coupled entropy and energy equations in the presence of heat generation have been solved to obtain the iso-contours of the entropy within the enclosures. The mapping is beneficial in the selection of suitable aspect ratio of the cooling enclosure for minimum entropy generation at specified operating condition (heat generation and Rayleigh number). The numerical results of the total entropy generation as function of aspect ratio, Rayleigh number and heat generation are correlated.
