Abstract

This study investigated the development of the ability to interpret conversational implicatures in English as an L2. The study followed a cross-sectional design and used a methodologically innovative audio-visual interpretation task with an oral production component. By orally reporting their interpretations, participants demonstrated comprehension of conversational implicatures viewed in a video, rather than employing a predetermined response approach used in earlier studies, which neither explore nor reveal how L2 learners understand implicatures. Fifty participants, forty-five learners at three proficiency levels and five native speakers of English, took part in the study. The results indicated that the comprehension of conversational implicatures showed a significant improvement as L2 proficiency increased. Learner responses were additionally coded based on stages of implicature calculation, which demonstrated that not only learners’ correct interpretations but also their incorrect responses provide insights into their interlanguage development. Such a finding further illustrates the superiority of a free response approach over a predetermined one since the former approach can better shed light on L2 learners’ true pragmatic competence in conversational implicatures.

Detailed interview procedure and the audio-visual task

For the audio-visual oral production task, participants saw a brief written plot summary of the TV series Friends on the computer screen. In addition, at the beginning of each scene, they saw a brief written background on the scene. Below are the instructions, the general plot summary and background information and transcripts of all the scenes.

Friends

Instructions: In this interview, you will be shown 20 scenes from the TV series Friends. After each scene, there will be a question or a statement requiring a response. Please orally answer them when you see a prompt. Your answers will be sound-recorded.

Waiter:

Oh, well they’re both exquisite.

Phoebe:

Both it is. Thank you.

Ross:

Oh, my God. Of course. Would you please excuse me for a moment? Do you know each other’s hometowns? Why don’t you … What’s going on?

Phoebe:

Well, not much. I was just thinking that since they just got engaged, it would be nice if they have privacy. So could I just move in with you for a couple days?

Ross:

Okay, sure. But what’s wrong with Monica and Chandler?

Phoebe:

Nothing. Why?

Yeah. “Happy Holidays, from Mona and Ross”. It’ll be cute, okay?

Not even on page seven?

Rachel:

What if she jumps out of the bassinet?

Ross:

Can’t hold her head up, but jumped.

Chandler:

We’re playing a game I learned at work. You have to name all the states in six minutes.

Ross:

What? That’s like insanely easy.

Chandler:

It’s harder than it sounds. You always forget one. Or in some cases, 14.

Monica:

It’s a stupid game and I wasn’t playing against others, so technically, techincally I didn’t lose.

Ross:

You forgot 14 states?

Monica:

Nobody cares about the Dakotas!

Joey:

Wait a second. We have to set a spending limit on the date. I don’t have the money to take her to a fancy place like that.

In this scene, Ross is angry because he does not have a place to live.

Ross:

Emily’s cousin kicked me out.

Charlie:

Isn’t another professor supposed to come with us?

Ross:

I don’t think so.

Charlie:

I’m pretty sure. A Professor Spafford from Cornell?

Ross:

Phoebe:

What type of guy are you looking for?

Rachel:

Someone that has his own tux or the ability to rent a tux.
