Association between genetic polymorphisms of telomere pathway genes and hydrogen peroxide level in omethoate exposure workers
Section snippets
Background
Omethoate is an organophosphorus pesticide (OP) which has highly toxic, highly effective and broad-spectrum features. The acute toxicity mechanism of OPs is reducing acetylcholinesterase by phosphorylation of the enzymes that results in accumulation of acetylcholine in cholinergic synapses of nervous system, consequently follows with acute muscarinic and nicotinic effects (Bird et al., 2016). In addition, the subchronic or chronic toxicity mechanism of OPs is stimulating the excessive
Study population and epidemiological data
The study population included 180 workers who had been exposed to omethoate and 115 controls. These exposure population were from an Ops manufacturer omethoate packaging workshop for more than eight years. The controls were recruited from a company in the same city, who have no history of exposure to OPs or other toxicants. A total of 179 omethoate exposure workers and 113 healthy controls were included after deleting the missing values of H2O2. Written informed consent of each participant was
population-based data
The age in the exposure group (43.75 ± 8.01) was significantly older than that in the control group (38.72 ± 8.12). We regarded 40 years old as the boundary and divided the ages into a low age group and a high age group. The basic characteristics including gender, age grouping, smoking status, drinking status differed between the exposure group and the control group (P < 0.001), as showed in Table 1.
The effects of demographic characteristics on H2O2 level
The H2O2 level in the exposure group (4.26 ± 0.71) was significantly higher than that in the
Discussion
Numerous environmental chemicals can cause the generation of free radicals and other ROS. What’s more, ROS can be used as immunotoxicity biomarkers in OPs exposure (Covantes-Rosales et al., 2019). In addition, ROS play an important role in toxicity mechanisms of pesticides through causing lipid peroxidation and disturbing the total antioxidant capability of the body (Hernandez et al., 2013; Ranjbar et al., 2005). Furthermore, ROS are implicated in the pathophysiology of many diseases, such as
Conclusions
We showed that the level of H2O2 is increased in subjects exposed to omethoate. The individuals carrying AA + AT genotypes in POT1 gene rs1034794 polymorphism were associated with the increase of H2O2 level induced among omethoate exposure.
