Abstract

In the summer period, the mud skate Bathyraja taranetzi lives at depths from ~100 to 757 m in the Pacific waters off the northern Kuril Islands and southeastern Kamchatka; it concentrates off the northern Kuril Islands in the depth range of 250−360 m. Specimens of 11.3−67.5 cm in length (TL) were recorded in catches. Only large fish occur at a depth of <200 m; they are constantly recorded in catches to a 450-m isobath. At the initial stages of development, mud skate concentrates in the range from 301 to 450 m. The average fish length tends to decrease to a depth of 300 m, then the size composition is similar and the fish length increases deeper than 450 m according to the data of solitary findings. Adult specimens inhabit the outer shelf and upper slope at the temperature of 1.8−3.9°С, fish, TL < 37 cm prefer the temperature of 3.7°С and above. The sex ratio is similar among immature specimens. Males prevail in the size group of 52−58 cm TL that is due to their early maturation compared to females. Females begin to dominate among fish TL > 60 cm because they attain larger sizes than males In general, the sex ratio in the population of mud skate is close to 1 : 1.
