Mechanical and thermal oxidative destruction was observed during gel spinning of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) high-modulus fibers. Destruction products (DPs) were observed in the solvent and on the surface of finished UHMWPE fibers using optical and scanning electron microscopy. IR spectra of the DPs were compared with those of UHMWPE reactor powder, solid paraffin, and the mineral oil used in the gel-spinning process to show that absorption bands corresponding to terminal aldehydes and acids and unsaturated hydrocarbons and ethers in the UHMWPE were strengthened by the destruction.
