Abstract
A new universal law of photoluminescence is established, according to which the ratio of the luminescence spectrum when excited at a given wavelength of light to the excitation spectrum of luminescence when observed at the same wavelength is a universal function determined by the emission spectrum of a blackbody. This relationship is based on the principle of detailed equilibrium for photoluminescence, which is ultimately a generalization of Kirchhoff’s fundamental law in relation to any material bodies, including phosphors.
