Abstract

The possibility of using readily available materials—Tyul’gansk lignite, Tisul’sk lignite (and its naturally oxidized form), humic acids, and coal residues after humic-acid extraction—in the sorption of copper, cobalt, manganese, and zinc cations from aqueous solutions is considered. Their effectiveness as sorbents is assessed by means of IR Fourier spectroscopy, ESR, Raman scattering, and CP/MAS 13C NMR analysis. The sorptional properties of humic acids are changed on modification by means of hydrogen peroxide and n-butanol, which alter their functional composition. Oxidation by hydrogen peroxide improves the sorptional properties, while alkylation with butanol impairs those properties. The sorbents are most selective for copper cations and least selective for manganese cations.
