    Both the mother and infant are undergoing profound changes in tissue architecture, with genetic programs switching on and off to achieve conception, embryology, birth, and lactation [26]. Under these conditions, oxytocin and microbial flora in the gut trigger a dramatic interplay of the intestinal epithelia and the enteric nervous system, influencing each other to optimize survival in both the mother and infant [32–34]. These early-life influences on gut health and systemic immunity shape the newborn and are likely to have profound health effects later in life.
