  • Mud in the blood: the role of protein-mineral complexes and extracellular vesicles in biomineralisation and calcification

    2020, Journal of Structural Biology
    Citation Excerpt :

Thus protein-mineral complex formation plays an important role in mineral metabolism especially in vertebrates. We introduced “calciprotein particles” as highly dynamic protein-mineral complexes stabilising fluid phases that help maintain local mineral supersaturation during biomineral formation, as well as solubilise excess biomineral to mediate transport and elimination without pathological mineral deposition in the extracellular space (Akiyama et al., 2020; Heiss et al., 2003; Smith, 2020). Calciprotein particles are membrane-less particles like lipoprotein particles the major form of circulating supramolecular complexes circulating in vertebrate blood.
