Abstract

The genus Laena Dejean, 1821 belongs to the subfamily Lagriinae, tribe Laenini. Four new species of this genus are described and illustrated from Sichuan under the following name: Laena ceratina Wei & Ren, sp. nov., Laena edentata Zhao & Ren, sp. nov. (from Sichuan and Qinghai), Laena latitarsia Wei & Ren, sp. nov. (from Sichuan and Yunnan) and Laena sufflofemora Wei & Ren, sp. nov.. A key to the known Laena species from Sichuan is provided. www.zoobank.org/urn:urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:8DBFD10F-F968-400C-846B-1C23E8DEC177.

Introduction

The genus Laena Dejean, 1821 is one of the most speciose genera in family Tenebrionidae. The species diversity of Lanea is very abundant in China. Until now, 122 Laena species were described from China (Schawaller, 2008, Schawaller and Aston, 2017, Zhao and Ren, 2011, Zhao and Ren, 2012a, Zhao and Ren, 2012b, Wei and Ren, 2019), including four new species described in this study. Most species from China were described by Schuster, 1916, Schuster, 1926, Schuster, 1940, Kaszab, 1965, Kaszab, 1970, Masumoto and Yin, 1993, Masumoto and Yin, 1994, Masumoto, 1996, Masumoto, 1998, Ren and Hua, 2006, Schawaller, 2001, Schawaller, 2008, Zhao and Ren, 2011, Zhao and Ren, 2012a, Zhao and Ren, 2012b, Schawaller and Aston, 2017, Wei and Ren, 2019. Schawaller described 79 new taxa (Schawaller, 2001, Schawaller, 2008, Schawaller and Aston, 2017) from China and provided a key to species (Schawaller, 2008) and simple biogeographic analysis (Schawaller, 2001) for the further study.

In recent years, extensive collection materials of the family Tenebrionidae in China (Xizang, Yunnan, Sichuan, Hunan, Qinghai) are housed in the Museum of Hebei University. The work of specimens identification is under way. After study the Laena specimens from Sichuan, four new species were recognized and described: L. ceratina Wei & Ren, sp. nov., L. edentata Zhao & Ren, sp. nov., L. latitarsia Wei & Ren, sp. nov., and L. sufflofemora Wei & Ren, sp. nov. In the present paper, the illustrations of habitus of Laena species from Sichuan Province are provided, without L. zogqenica Schawaller, 2001 and L. gigantea Schuster, 1940 for the specimens of these two species are not be examined.

Material and methods

Specimens from five collections were examined and their locality data recorded. New species were illustrated, photographed and measured using a Leica M205 A stereomicroscope equipped with a drawing tube, a Leica DFC450 camera. Line drawings and photos were edited in CorelDRAW 14 SP2 and Adobe Photoshop 7.0. Body length was measured from the anterior margin of clypeus to the elytral apex, body width across the widest part of elytra.
