Mullite Synthesis Based on Aluminum- and Silicon-Oxide Products of Sulfuric Acid Processing of Nepheline

  • Published:
Glass and Ceramics Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Hydrated aluminum oxide (HAO) and silicon dioxide SiO2 , which were obtained during sulfuric acid treatment of nepheline, and commercially produced, fine aluminum hydroxide (FAH) were used to synthesize mullite 3Al2O3∙2SiO2. It was found that the mechanism of synthesis is different. When using HAO mullite is formed directly upon the interaction of aluminum and silicon oxides. When sintering with FAH mullite synthesis passes through a stage where an intermediate aluminum-silicate phase—sillimanite Al2O3∙SiO2— is formed.
