Intellectual History as History of Engagement? The French Scholarship Modern Intellectual History Pub Date : 2021-04-14 Massimo Asta
Few intellectual histories of France by non-French authors in recent years have produced the bitter polemic that Tony Judt's Past Imperfect: French intellectuals (1944–1956) elicited. Published in French at the same time as the English edition in 1992, the book was held to account for its questionable historiographical legitimacy, alleged inaccuracy in the treatment of sources, and not-so-hidden partisanship

Women in the City: Identifying the Gynocentric Zone in Melbourne and Sydney, 1880s to 1920s Australian Historical Studies Pub Date : 2021-04-13 Shurlee Swain
Feminist analyses have shown how from the mid-nineteenth century women shaped the cities in which they lived. This article argues for the existence of an urban gynocentric zone, the site of a cluster of women-owned businesses charged with handling the unwanted products of women’s bodies. Shaped by shame, it constituted a female space within a larger metropolis, invisible, unacknowledged, yet well enough
