Well-differentiated chrondrosarcoma in a cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis) J. Med. Primatol. (IF 0.7) Pub Date : 2023-02-21 Sarah Ruth Walz, Ryan Patrick Traslavina, Byron Fredy Ruiz
A cynomolgus macaque presented with an osteolytic lesion of the left femur. Histopathology was consistent with well-differentiated chondrosarcoma. No metastasis was found in chest radiographs out to 12 months. This case suggests survival out to 1 year without metastasis following amputation may be possible in NHPs with this condition.

Effects of pair housing on behavior, cortisol, and clinical outcomes during quarantine-like procedures for rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) J. Med. Primatol. (IF 0.7) Pub Date : 2023-02-06 Martina N. Jackson, Melissa A. Truelove, Kimberly Williams, Jiandong Chen, Reneé H. Moore, Jennifer S. Wood, Joyce K. Cohen, Bloomsmith Mollie
Compatible pair housing of macaques in research settings increases species-typical behaviors and facilitates beneficial social buffering. It is not yet established whether these benefits are maintained after intrafacility transfer and domestic quarantine, which are two stressors that can lead to behavioral and clinical abnormalities.

Polyarteritis nodosa in a captive common wooly monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha) associated with intestinal necrosis, peritonitis, and sepsis J. Med. Primatol. (IF 0.7) Pub Date : 2023-01-19 Thaynara Parente de Carvalho, Daniel Oliveira Santos, Ayisa Rodrigues Oliveira, André Duarte Vieira, Ana Luiza Lessa Quintão, Laice Alves da Silva, Clarissa Helena Santana, Lucas dos Reis de Souza, Herlandes Penha Tinoco, Carlyle Mendes Coelho, Angela Tinoco Pessanha, Rafael Gariglio Clark Xavier, Marcelo Pires Nogueira de Carvalho, Rodrigo Otávio Silveira Silva, Tatiane Alves da Paixão, Renato Lima
Polyarteritis nodosa is an idiopathic necrotizing vasculitis that affects small to medium-sized arteries. We describe a case of polyarteritis nodosa in a captive common wooly monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha) associated with transmural intestinal necrosis and secondary peritonitis. This condition must be considered for differential diagnosis of segmental arteritis in neotropical primates.

Seasonal variations in gonadosomatic index and seminal quality of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri collinsi) J. Med. Primatol. (IF 0.7) Pub Date : 2022-12-05 Wlaisa Vasconcelos Sampaio, Danuza Leite Leão, Patrícia da Cunha Sousa, Sheyla Farhayldes Souza Domingues
We hypothesized that seasonal variations in testicular biometry in Saimiri collinsi are influenced by body mass and that testicular enlargement is related to improved seminal quality. Therefore, the gonadosomatic index (GSI) can be a tool to determine reproductive seasons and the predictors of seminal quality.

Measles in non-human primates J. Med. Primatol. (IF 0.7) Pub Date : 2022-11-28 Dmitriy I. Dogadov, Karen K. Kyuregyan, Alexandra M. Goncharenko, Mikhail I. Mikhailov
It is six decades since the measles vaccine was first introduced, and yet we continue to see frequent outbreaks of this disease occurring all over the world. Many non-human primate (NHP) species, including apes, are susceptible to the measles virus. Spontaneous measles outbreaks have been described in a number of zoos and primate centers worldwide. Research into the spontaneous and experimental infection
