Abstract We examine the impact of coach gender on the probability that NCAA Division I women’s basketball teams advance to the end-of-year NCAA tournament. Results of our full sample analysis show that coach gender has no significant impact on the likelihood of advancing, providing no evidence for ability as a potential explanation for the decline in women coaches. In the subsample analysis, while

According to Putnam (2000) and Bourdieu (1986), social disparities may result in the formation of narrow social bonds that exacerbate existing social cleavages and impede collective action. Motivated by this insight, we examine the relationship between social disparities and social distancing during the pre-vaccine Covid pandemic in the US. Using a panel of weekly, county-level observations, we find

Eliminating Environmental Costs to Proof-of-Work-Based Cryptocurrencies: A Proposal Eastern Economic Journal Pub Date : 2023-01-20 Gabriel Mathy
The process of mining Bitcoin consumes an enormous amount of electricity. This is an inherent feature of cryptocurrencies that are proof-of-work based. Instead, I propose an alternative algorithm for Bitcoin that would reduce the electricity usage on the order of trillions. Rather than adjusting the difficulty of Bitcoin mining upward when more miners are devoting computing power to mining, the returns

Are We Floating Yet? Duration of Fixed Exchange Rate Regimes Eastern Economic Journal Pub Date : 2021-10-26 Bizuneh, Menna
This study examines the duration of fixed exchange rate regimes to determine the factors that impact the probability of an exit from a peg. Using de facto exchange rate regime classification, we find that duration of a peg is non-monotonic. The results of the semi-parametric proportional hazard model highlight that GDP growth and openness decrease the probability of an exit from a peg, while growing

Do Governors Lead or Follow? Timing of Stay-at-Home Orders Eastern Economic Journal Pub Date : 2021-09-21 McCannon, Bryan C.
I investigate the timing of the Stay-at-Home orders. I use daily Google search data to track early interest in the novel Coronavirus pandemic. I ask whether governors responded to heightened concern (i.e., following) or if their decisions are independent of citizen sentiment (i.e., leading). I show that Stay-at-Home orders were initiated sooner in states that saw early, heightened in the virus. This

We investigate the effect of standardized mathematics scores for young adults on the number of COVID-19 cases in the USA. We find that a one-grade-level increase in test scores led to a decrease in COVID-19 cases 30, 60, and 90 days after the first case in each county. Our findings suggest that if states and localities implement policies that increase the level of education and comprehension of mathematics

Do Disease Epidemics Stimulate or Repress Entrepreneurial Activity? Eastern Economic Journal Pub Date : 2021-09-03 Berdiev, Aziz N., Saunoris, James W.
This study addresses a unique angle by examining an under looked determinant of entrepreneurship related to disease epidemics. In times of natural disasters, such as disease epidemics, new demands emerge that might promote entrepreneurship. Using data on a large cross section of countries, we empirically test whether and to what extent the incidence and severity of disease epidemics affect the prevalence
