The declining interest of medical students in psychiatry is concerning. Despite this decline, little intervention has occurred within medical schools to promote psychiatry. Many deterring factors affect a medical student or junior doctor's decision to pursue a career in psychiatry, including a lack of respect for psychiatrists among other medical specialties, low salary, and glamorisation of other specialties within the media. Public perception and societal stigma has a substantial effect on students' future career choices and can influence medical students.
