In the double-blind STARTS clinic trial (n=100), Valiengo and colleagues compared frontotemporoparietal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS; 20 minutes twice daily for 5 days) with sham treatment as an add-on treatment for negative symptoms in schizophrenia. At 6 weeks, the decrease from baseline in the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale negative symptoms subscale score was greater in the active treatment group than the sham treatment group (−4·49 [SD 3·50] vs −1·84 [1·82]; group difference 2·65 [95% CI 1·51–3·79]; p<0·001), with the difference maintained at 12 weeks follow-up (2·35 [1·02–3·67]; p<0·001). Apart from burning sensation at day 5 with tDCS, the frequency of adverse events was similar between the two groups, and no serious adverse events were noted.
