Preventing perinatal HIV transmission is the first step towards optimisation of health outcomes for the rapidly expanding global population of children born to women living with HIV. However, the child health benefits of maternal antiretroviral therapy (ART) extend further, as improved health and survival allows women living with HIV to provide and to care for their families.
