Pulmonary embolism is the most dreaded presentation of venous thromboembolic disease. Because it is managed by interdisciplinary teams, including internists, haematologists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, vascular medicine specialists, vascular surgeons, and generalists, among others, issues can often be overlooked. Furthermore, it has not been addressed in previous reports of cause-specific mortality by the Global Burden of Disease workgroup.
