Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major public health problem with an estimated 257 million people with chronic HBV infection and around 650 000 annual deaths due to long-term HBV-related liver disease (cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma). Vaccination represents the cornerstone of public health measures to eradicate HBV.
