We appreciate the interest in our study investigating the association between maternal pre-pregnancy obesity and risk of preterm birth among mother–child pairs in the USA. We found that maternal pre-pregnancy obesity was significantly associated with the risk of preterm birth in the general population, but the risk differed according to maternal age and race or ethnicity. We called for further investigations to understand the underlying mechanisms.
