A series of new phytochlorin–fullerene dyads was prepared. Synthetic pathway includes attachment of glycine to aldehyde-containing phytochlorins via reductive amination, where 3- and 7-carbonyl-substituted pheophorbides exhibit surprisingly different reactivity. The appropriate conditions of reactions (e.g. solvents and reducing agents) were determined in each case.
