The intense electromagnetic near-field and hot electrons of illuminated plasmonic metal nanoparticles enable hydrogen abstraction from the C(sp3)−H bond of the Cα atom of β-O-4 linkages. The cleavage of unreactive ether Cβ−O bonds is facilitated to produce aromatic compounds with unsaturated double bonds.
