Paleoenvironmental control of mineralogical geochemical composition and thickness of the evaporite sequence of the upper Lutetian–Priabonian series, Tamerza region, southwest Tunisia

Upper Lutetian–Priabonian carbonate and evaporite deposits (Seugdal Formation) of the Tamerza area (Southwestern Tunisia) correspond to two main facies dolomite and gypsum, recognized in bedded evaporites. The present work aimed to follow mineralogical and geochemical features of two neighbor-studied sections with the same age. The Little Cluse and the Great Cluse sections are characterized by the facies and thickness variations. All samples collected from these two bedded evaporites were investigated using XRD and XRF analyses; however, the marker levels were examined by SEM and infrared analyses. The data obtained show that the samples of Little Cluse sare mostly composed of dolomite. In contrast, the samples of the Great Cluse are composed of dolomite in the lower part and gypsum in the upper part. The correlative level marker, palygorskite overlying dolomite at the top, suggests the persistence of continental conditions featured by conglomerate level in the little Cluse. However, the dolomite of the lower part of the Great Cluse is covered by palygorskite level. It changes to gypsum deposits recognized in the lagoon environment in the upper part. The crystallization of thick gypsum succession is enhanced by subsidence activity. This idea is confirmed by the occurrence of horst and graben structures, which are the result of an extensional syn-sedimentary movement affecting upper Lutetian–Priabonian succession.
