Foraminifers from the Clay Pulp of the Shugo Mud Volcano, Taman Peninsula

Abstract

A foraminifer assemblage has been studied from clay pulp of the Shugo mud volcano in the Kerch–Taman volcanic area (Taman Peninsula) to refine the stratigraphic section of this region. The mud volcanic breccia contains the foraminifera shells of the Miocene, middle Eocene (Lutetian), and Late Carboniferous (Santonian, Campanian, Maastrichtian) species. The shells of the Neogene and Paleogene foraminifers exhibit good preservation. The worse preservation of the Cretaceous shells can be related to the composition of host rocks, which probably include terrigenous and carbonate-terrigenous turbidites. The finding of relict Late Cretaceous and Middle Eocene foraminifers in the clay pulp indicate the presence of sequences of this age in the section.
